Argh....

Trying to wrap up my driveway (permeable) - and the idiots delivered 6 tonnes of what is definitely not MOT type 3.

Sadly the guys on site spent a couple of hours distributing ~3 tonnes of it, so now we need to dig it back up.

At this stage - I'm torn between:

(1) Get the cretins to take it all back, and bring the right aggregate

(2) Filter it on site (to remove the fines)

Bloody irritating !! And my chances of getting money back are slim to none.

P.s. and before anyone blames us for not noticing - unless you are looking for it - this is an easy enough mistake. Could be type 2, or type 1, or some confungled mix of the two. But it's not type 3. Too many fines and water not draining.

Yeah I think that's going to be a full days work tomorrow. I'm fuming.

Problem is, I don't trust them to bring the right stuff.

So they could take off tomorrow with what we have, and then we're waiting around indefinitely for the right stuff.

Very frustrated right now.

Are you sure it isn't type 3?  I've seldom used it, but know it isnt 'single size' and does have small aggregate in it. The supplier can adjust the mix within gradings to suit what they have.

I've recently been surprised by the look of a ballast delivery... it seemed not to half much middle-sized stone.

100%. It's easy enough to check by pouring water on it and seeing if it pools or drains.

I've dug it back up now and piled it up, and I'm working on getting the supplier to swap it. Doing it by hand isn't economical.

Update: ok, so a few learnings to share:

  • Our supplier has taken ownership and raised with their supplier.
  • It appears that we got the last dregs of their supplier's MOT Type 3 supply, such that we were getting all the fines "at the bottom of the barrel" - so to speak - i.e. the fines content was disproportionate, even though it came from the Type 3 'bay'
  • Their supplier has a fresh delivery of type 3 coming in today
  • They will send us photos to confirm
  • And then our supplier will do a swap tomorrow AM

A huge pain - and it's cost us at least 1 full man day in labour which we're going to have to bear - but it is what it is.

And we have learnt to watch out for this risk. Thanks for the contribution.

Next time would you stress to the BM that you must have a proper mix?

If it helps any we have had some MOT 3 with quite variable composition. Some was quite chunky, some had more fines than you would expect. I took it all and I think it'll work out OK in our application - which was a permeable driveway. I've seen no standing water since, so it must be draining. I'm suspecting that as it's a more unusual material that maybe it has more variable quality.

By its nature, crushed rock is more random in shape and will have more air gaps. Gravel has been rounded by nature and may consolidate more.

I cannot remember if that is allowed for in the grading specification.

But, I also know from experience that the same crushed stone will abrade under repeated loading and so become denser and less permeable.  So a slight slope is still worth considering.

That’s a glass half full moment, c’mon!

Kudos to them taking ownership, and in the grand scheme this is a drop in the ocean, surely?

I've had this photo through from the supplier of the replacement aggregate. What do you guys think ? Does it look ok ?

My contractor used mainly 40+mm limestone, with no fines. I don't think there were any stones under 30mm. but what you show looks fine, and fines-free. Really as long as it lacks fines which could emulate cement you are probably OK.

Pleased to share that they took away the old material and delivered a clean batch of aggregate with far fewer fines.

Just shows the care needed to deliver a suds compliant end result !

Looks like the stuff I put down on my driveway. Drains well.

Right at the start of our build the wrong type of MOT was delivered and put down when I was away (loads of really large stones) Was too much like hard work to take back up so I left it. It was mostly around the back of our house where the patio was going. Fast forward to now and we are putting the patio down but had to dig all of this stuff out as no use for a base. Fortunately I managed to get a local to take it.
