Tennentslager Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Does anyone @ProDave @Onoff see anything wrong with this consumer unit. Ignore the odd wire exiting, just the fuses...
Mr Punter Posted October 5 Posted October 5 You have a space for a new MBC. My charger has a C80 but I imagine it depends on the charger spec.
Onoff Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Other than it's "old"? Are they Wylex NSB** breakers? If so they're obsolete. Looks like you have half the circuits on the main switch and half on the RCD. However...if a NSB range C40 RCBO would do for your EV charger I may have one here. I have a bnib old stock CU. Think I've a B32 RCBO too...again new... Is that SWA in a regular stuffing gland?
Nickfromwales Posted October 5 Posted October 5 You could just slide the RCD over and that would get you front of house earth protection for every circuit. I thoroughly dislike split load boards.

RCBO CU is obvs the best possible solution, but then you need a new metalclad CU and a load of paperwork to go with it.

I thoroughly dislike split load boards. Do that with that Type AC RCD and he won’t be fitting an EV charger to it though. You need Type A or ‘better’ RCD protection to fit an EV charger. It also needs to be double pole/switched neutral, which rules out the kind offer of the C40 RCBO above, which is only single pole, albeit Type A. Nothing necessarily wrong with that board. Swap out the RCD for a Type A and fit some Type A RCBO’s in place of the unprotected MCB’s and it’ll be fine. If you go to that extent though, you’re most of the way to a new board. If I was asked to fit an EV charger there on a budget I’d be fitting a 100A Type A RCD in place of the existing and an MCB for the charger. I can’t recall off the top of my head if the Wylex switched neutral RCBO’s fit that particular board - they keep changing them and they’re not always backwards compatible, it’s a bloody pain. 1

Yea, at that point I'd just replace the CU, and enjoy a bit of future-proofing.
