Everyone keeps leaving my pedestrian gate open , so I need a closer .

They all seem to fix on the assumption the gate and its ‘sides ‘ ( panels / wall etc ) are inline I.e flush with gate .

My gate is recessed . So I need a closer that can deal with that . Not obvious looking online from what I’ve seen which can do this at a reasonable price .

Only gate photo I have to hand , but you can see it’s recessed against the quoins ( same on other side )

Where’s all the (expletive deleted)ing engineers and brains ?

This is tricky because it’s recessed - come on (expletive deleted) wits !

How about?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/IRONZONE®-Spring-Closer-Adjustable-Tension/dp/B08Z89YK93?sr=8-6

Looks like it will fit in the gap for the hinges?

Not recommending the product - was just the first google hit for what I was thinking of.

This type of thing was my first thought . But doesn’t the spring have to be flush to the gate ? . Because my gates recessed it wouldn’t work ? - ChatGPT told me that

Tapered washers under the hinges. Tached to the hinge support.  Job fixed.

A washer with a fall effectively ? . That going to provide enough potential energy to cause the gate to close ?? 🤔

A simple spring will do won't it?

Image stolen fair and square from TikTok

Apparently not because whilst I can attach to gate there’s nothing to attach to other side I.e no pillar - just the wall . I assume twisting that fixing so it attached to the recess stonework will cause it not to function . Check previous photo

Rising but hinges (which is what the tapered washer is trying to create

That might be the easiest method to work - change the hinges . Was looking for a cheaper and lazier solution

Have to say the way they are showing these springs installed isn't the way I was imagining it. Was thinking you'd install the hinge directly inline with the pivot point so the closing force comes from the rotation of the spring.

Crudely:

Not sure if thats the right product to do this but it does look like you have space for something that does the above.

Oh ! You’re doing the spring vertical ! I assumed ( in my logic at least ) had to be horizontal I.e from fixed side to gate

The spring might need to be constrained to stop it flopping around and the product I linked doesn't do that. But I'm sure I've seen a spring hinge installed like this before so I'd bet there is a product for this.

Thats a different take on it but I can see that working, though how long that one lasts IDK, seems a little light weight.

How about this sort

The spring mechanism would screw to your pillar and the arm would push against the gate.

Might need to search a bit harder for an outdoor version that is likely to withstand weather.

Maybe ! Worth a look

Yeah looks a bit budget ! I guess the gate weighs 50kg so need something hardcore
