Two of our landing triple glazed Origin aluminium windows do not open.

This time of year the landing can get extremely warm transferring heat into other rooms.

We are looking at installing an external window film which reduces the solar heat gain enormously.

What are the best products for this that people have used please?

3M do some that are fairly transparent for the reduction in solar gain but expensive.  The silver reflective ones are cheap and effective but noticeably darker inside.

Will a film affect your desired solar gain during the winter months?

An external shading solution that can be removed when not required would be your best bet.

Can you mount sail shades?

Shutters outside?  Or the fancy french name for same

It is one consideration although it is likely to be massively more expensive and I don't like holes being drilled through the house for the electrics or manual operation

It's mainly NE facing so gets very little solar gain in the winter but becomes hot in the summer.

It's 1st floor so shade sails are not something that I would want to maintain.

Breize Soliel is a consideration if the film doesn't work effectively enough. Shutters are probably the best overall solution but not one I want to entertain at this stage due to cost and drilling through to inside of the property.

I've briese soliel but it required structural calcs and a steel window header to connect to (done as part of build). That said they worked brilliantly this year. Just check your warranty with windows supplier vs any film to make sure it doesn't invalidate it. Or plant tall trees!
