Created a play area for the kids at the back of the garden, swing set with slide etc. and just need to bark it to finish it off. Any suggestions as to the best type (softer the better presumably) and how to calculate the required amount? Recommended depth?

The area to be covered is 44m²

How to use our play area bark

Our play area bark is a quality bark material with an 8-40 mm particle size, that can be used for private and public play areas as well as a general garden mulch. Bark is made from the soft outer layer of trees and is, therefore, a very safe surface for your children to play on. Play area bark has a pleasant dark brown and red appearance that is non-staining and offers great protection from frost for your flower beds. For private play areas, we would recommend a minimum depth of 10-15 centimetres and 15-30 centimetres for public areas. When used as a border bark, play area bark retains its colour and size longer than most other organic mulches. With regular raking, play area bark can last for years.

I only use bark for weed control on flower beds and it does degrade and become firmer over time.

Crikey I didn’t think I’d need that much! 370 bags for 100mm depth. That depth feel a bit ott?

Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children lol :D

Just look for the soft impact rubber matting panels that do not need maintenance and stop noggins from a-floggins.

Apparently BS EN 1177 standard requires 300 mm of bark or wood chip for critical fall heights up to 3 meters and in the USA they want 230mm to protect from falls of 7 feet. oh and an initial extra 25% to allow for settling!

Yep, that’s one massive cat litter tray!  As @Nickfromwales, I'd be looking at rubber mats in critical areas.

Yeah I’m just going with 50-60mm depth. 300mm is insane.

its a double swing set with small slide, hardly bungee jumping without a cord!

We only ever had plain ordinary grass under swings etc.

When I was at school the school playground had tarmac under the swings and climbing frames.  You learned NOT to fall off.

Just saying.

Ha yeah so true. Hardwood chipping at 50mm depth is what they’re getting. Probably overkill but is what it is.
