Verdict on this plastering - good enough?

Featured Replies

Just had our first ceiling done. Pleasant guy but quite young and his view is that the board lines will paint out. I don't think so and don't think that this is anywhere near good enough but would welcome views? thanks.

No, you should not see board lines like that.

Was it tapered edge plasterboard?  did he lay a scrim tape?  Did he go over the joints first with a base coat before plastering the lot?

Some joints were tapered but some butted. He taped the joints but then I only saw it again when it was finished. He told me he did a base coat and top coat. There are also some areas where you can see/feel the mesh tape.

Looks fine

Putting a level on a ceiling is over the top

You should not see the board lines. He should come and fix.

Agree use of the level is a bit overkill unless out by sight.

Perfectly normal for the long edges (tapered) and the butted joints to be holding more skim, taking longer to dry out, and those lines being “visible”.

What is not acceptable, is feeling the scrim tape, as this cannot be sanded or painted over, and will be a big problem when you come to decorate.

You can see he has over-polished this a bit, through inexperience most prob, hence too much skim has been removed over the tape and it has been exposed.

This needs to be PVA’d and redlined afaic, and then ask the guy to play the second set on a bit heavier. Don’t be frightened to speak to him about it, we’re all human at the end of the day, and if he’s a tidy chap he’ll take it on board and up his game a bit.

Oh, and don’t put a spirit level against the ceiling again, 🤦‍♂️, less gin more tonic ok!!!

Thanks everyone. I plead not guilty to the spirit level - it was our joiner's idea to do that!

He’s not the sharpest chisel in his box 😂
