Pocster Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Hey all ive got a steel running around 6 metres for a glass sliding door just wondering how the installers fix it to the steel ? im cladding the outside ; so if they drill the steel and bolt through I will have to suspend my cladding work . if they have some ‘special’ screws that actually bite steel then no problem :-) how do they fix to steel ?? cheers
PeterW Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Usually use Tek screws - will self drill through anything really.

MikeSharp01 Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 2 hours ago, PeterW said: Tek screws Is that a trade name, as looking at some of these that come up they don't look like they will drill into an RSJ or similar, maybe through a sheet folded lintel.
Declan52 Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 They will go into an rsj no problem. Used them to attach wall plate to an rsj and they don't be long drilling through. Obviously depends on your drill as well!!
dpmiller Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 there's two types- the coarse thread is for sheet metal, but there's a fine thread especially for thick mild steel: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-5-5-x-100mm-TEK-CORRUGATED-ROOFING-SCREW-HEAVY-STEEL-SELF-DRILLING/221102445632?hash=item337abb9440:m:mi53nBNcz4ub73afwYgp3Zg
Bitpipe Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I'm pretty sure that my 4.5m sliders are fixed at the sides only (using custom metal straps fitted to the outside of the frame and the inside wall. Need to see if I have any photos of that stage to be sure..
chrisb Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 TF supplier has just used similar fixings to attach 2x4 timbers to my steel windframe (which will have 4.5m bifolds underneath it). I'm expecting to use similar to fix the bifold frame to the steel. They go in very quickly and easily, just make sure you don't catch your hand on the pointy end afterwards!
