SteamyTea
So they were letting this place out, or probably slumming it while they let the main house out, with the rules changing they feel cheated.
Pocster
No idea if they let either . The fact it has no toilet / bathing can’t qualify it as “ habitable “ - and yet triple council tax ….
DannyT
Apparently they were told they couldn’t let it out and was classed as uninhabitable because had no toilet or bathroom by the council. Even offered it to a Ukrainian family but again didn’t meet criteria. Fast forward to second home tax and now it’s suddenly classed as one and is worth a tidy £4000 a year for the council. What a state the u.k is in!

What a state the u.k is in! Exactly ! It’s all about cash for the council ! Surprised if my wooden shed ( with no bathroom ) isn’t classed as habitable! ☺️

It would probably be taxable in France - there's a 'garden shed tax' for any covered structure of 5m² or more with a ceiling height of 1.8m or more. This year it's a €1,038 lump sum in the Île-de-France, €916 elsewhere.

Mike
Yes, if Rachel Reeves is looking for ideas, try France.
SteamyTea
If you tax one area, there is probably a reduction in another area, or a corresponding increase in public services (AKA market failure). These people were already paying council tax on the property, so this is probably not a simple story at all.

It’s a nice ‘media’ story though
Temp
When my Aunt died we had to extend her lease before selling her flat. Freeholder delayed and delayed forcing us to take them to court which cost even more time. Eventually the council slapped us with double council tax because the property was empty. We finally completed on the sale in June, stopped the Direct Debit and wrote to the council to notify them. Months later they still haven't responded stating they have a three month backlog of post ! This is now delaying us winding up her estate, most of which is going to charities.
scottishjohn
the guy who bought my other rebuildable property had a good idea its not yet habitable ,but because he was living on site in a caravan they wanted to charge him rates on the caravan he told them with docs to back it up that he was running his biz remotely from the site so it was classed as commercial small biz inscotland of less than £17000 rateable value pay no biz rates nice one!!!
