flanagaj
I want our house to have a cast concrete wall which runs from the ground floor right up through the second floor. It's simply a feature wall, but wondering whether anyone knows whether you can rent the formwork or whether it should be constructed on site. I am trying to achieve the look below. Will it require an SE to design the rebar system that will be required. Plan is to hang our floating stairs of it.
Conor
Two options. Hire formwork that can be lined. Second. Hire a couple formwork joiners (a specific trade) and they will build your shuttering. Expect it to be an expensive endeavour. Full height for work like that can go horribly wrong and can be dangerous... I've done a lot of joinery and formwork, but don't have the balls for something like that.
crispy_wafer
Any reason why the wall couldnt be blockwork, add a micro cement finish to imitate the concrete?
Mr Punter
Very very expensive. Get it designed and spec'd and sent out to specialist contractors. This is not a DIY job. It can look really crap if you get grout runs, bad formwork moulds, wrong colour etc.

It would always look like a block wall with a face on it. Is it to look as rustic as the photo, with artificial bolt holes in it? will you leave the bolt fixings in? Do the planks need to be selected and arranged for the desired visual effect of grain and knots? will the concrete be vibrated into place as if it was a serious structure, or placed more approximately with the chance of getting 'interesting' voids and bubbles showing? Hired shutters are plain and boring. I think you need to make yours as a one use and expensive thing. I am worrying on your behalf that this is a single chance thing, and you won't know if you like it until it is stripped How do you fill right to the top? Is there a ceiling void that it can extend into? 19 hours ago, flanagaj said: Will it require an SE to design the rebar system that will be required. Plan is to hang our floating stairs of it. Probably. If it is linked to the structure in conventional manner instead of a block wall, then perhaps not. Mesh for anticrack will suffice. But if it is a 2 storey core to the building then yes needs an SE to look at the circumstances.
flanagaj
I might instead create some large GFRC concrete panels and bolt them to the wall will stainless bolts. Not the same look, but will give the industrial look that I am after. GFRC panels are easy to make (done them before), and aside from the time making them, they are super cheap too.
