Bath screen leak

Recommended Posts

Hi, please can someone help with some bath screen leak advice.
we have had our bathroom done few months ago. We have had a leak, after taking the bath panel off, we noticed the water was running down from behind the wall. The plumber has come 3 times now and played around with the screen but we still have the same issue. I will attach some pictures, if anyone has any idea what it could be. Thank you.

How much water is there?

Does it run even when not showering?

Where does the vertical copper pipe run to?

It's all a bit odd because to get behind the tiles there must be  path in through the grout somewhere and that may be further up the wall than the base.

Water only runs down when showering. But only if the water hits the bath screen. We have still used the bath but avoided the corners of the shower screen and it’s fine. Soon as we point it into the corner of the screen, it literally pours through.

It’s not coming through any of the pipes. It runs through the edges of the screen somehow.

That is then very weird.

So the problem is here:

Can you put a spirit level on the bath edge and see if it sloping towards or away from the wall - because to get behind the tiles it MUST be getting through them either directly - some tiles can be porous, or the grout - more likely. So I suspect the bath edge is slightly sloped towards the wall causing the water to flow under the hinge and behind that there is a hole in the grout that is letting the water through and behind the tiles where it runs down and out as you have indicated. Has the plumber take the hinge off to look?

IMO that screen needs to come off, for water to “pour through” rather than be damp something is seriously wrong.

+1 I reckon the tile line is not fully grouted or sealed behind the screen rail allowing water to go behind the tiles

.. and before you re-apply the sealant, make sure the surfaces are VERY clean and dry, and then wipe them over with some methylated spirit to remove any "grease" from fingers. Let that evaporate off naturally (leave it for 5-10 minutes to be sure)

I have seen similar on a shower.  The tray was fitted, then tiled and grouted, then the screen fitted, then all siliconed.  The tiler leaves out the grout around the top of the bath/shower so it can be siliconed after the screen goes on.  When the screen profile is fitted, the small bit at bottom ends up with no grout or silicone.  You need to take off the wall profile (a bit of a ball ache) and either grout or silicone the bottom, then refit.
