Rendering over Knauf external insultation

Recommended Posts

Hi,

As part of a rebuild, I plan to install Knauf external insulation and then to render part and cedar clad part.

Does anyone have any experience / tips on

  • fitting the Knauf insulation - esp on dealing with the window reveals etc?
  • rendering over the Knauf insulation?
  • type of render best to use?

Also interested in identifying suppliers for good quality cedar cladding if anyone has any experience in this area?

Really grateful for any helo and advice!

Thanks in advance

W

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your project. I clad our house with Western Red Cedar which I sourced from a local timber yard, as I was able to get the lengths I wanted, in the right grade at a better price than on-line. I used grade 2 clear and better which was virtually knot free.

Hi,

Thanks - that's helpful.

Who did you use? I'm not a million miles away in West Somerset.

Did you treat the Cedar before fixing with anything - maybe a UV protection etc?

Thx

My two thoughts.
how big an area is the cedar, you might want to re think this once you have the prices.
we used western red cedar and after covid it doubled in price, it has since gone up at least another 50%.
you might find an English grown cedar to be cheaper, or local larch.

with the insulation boards, find a supplier that details all the fixing schedules and what to render it with, if they cannot supply all this information then look at a different supplier for the insulation.

do not second guess it.

I recently moved to Cornwall from East Kent where I built the house, so not much use I'm afraid. I didn't treat the cladding and we let it go silvery grey.

I got to know senior management at a couple of timber merchants, because we built premises for them. They tried to dissuade purchases of western red cedar because it tends to go odd colours and slimy in their SE area.. They even issued written warnings of this, but supplied it if the client pursued it. Apparently it is brilliant in central Canada where the summers are hot and the winters cold, and the bugs die. But in the constant dampness of the uk it can go a bit yucky.

I showed the document to clients who's original Architects specified it and they all changed their minds and saved a stack of money.

How many Architect's brochures show it weathered 'as nature intended' ? None, it is always in the new red form.

I'd be happy to hear to the contrary from anyone who has used it and it is a few years on.

To which add the wrong spec of nails used on this cedar.

I'm not keen on weathered chestnut either, but it's a matter of opinion

A local supplier might be Brookridge timber or vastern timber.

I have quite a few samples from a few different suppliers weathering to see how they change.

have you decided on if you like knots?  Poplar is nice if you want less knots but I find it a bit too plane it lacks the character of knots and grain.
Have you looked at thermowood or micronised wood.  The wood is heat dried (not the charred look) so harder and less changeable we like the Ash.
