In Roof PV options

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at options and prices for PV, with my build budget tight, I still want to add a 4KW array to the roof,

Getting costs the only options I can find are GSE trays and there are coming in more expensive than the panels. Are there other systems out there or am I looking on the wrong place.

Eg if I went for 10 off 405w panels, I would need 20 of the half trays, plus clips trims etc.

Midsummer quoted over 2k for the trays and ancillaries. Any ideas or alternatives? At these costs I may (have to), look at a ground mount after the build.

Not sure where £50 quid comes from for PV modules?

From here.

You can get two half trays at 28.60, so £57.20

Is the quite correct, there could be an error as they do happen.

the quote did include the panels @ £1352 (£1622)  / plus the GSE trays couldn't screen shot the whole lot(🙈), but yes, including vat the trays and trims are £1800 (not 2K as I said earlier, but, more expensive than the panels.)

the quote

How does it compare to normal rail mounted.

It does seem a little steep, but falls into line at around £1000/kWp.

When I worked for the small wind turbine manufacturer, the complete installation cost about £12,000, the turbine was a couple of £2.

The financial backers wanted to halve the price, we pointed out that the savings were not to be made on the turbine, but on everything else.

You may have noticed I have occasionally disparaged the sale of small turbines, and their promotion by "green deal" type quangos,  about 15 years ago.

There were even lots of EPC points for them.

You may be sworn to secrecy, but am I wrong? Even a tiny bit?

Turbines cf green roofs mentioned elsewhere:  I may open another thread.

small turbines,

The company was small.

The turbines were 4 or 5 kW.

Not large, or worthwhile, but okay as turbines go, if on a hill or SW facing slope.

But know what you mean.

Electric generation requires large kit, even PV.  Best left to the big boys to sort it out.
