New log burner install-Cowl at chimney pot fixing !!

Hi everybody, I had a log burner installed yesterday and was somewhat surprised buy the way they finished off the cowl on top of the liner in the chimney pot. I thought that had to be clamped around the top of the pot. But here they,ve just used sand and cement to fill in the gap.

Anyone else seen this before and is it standard practice? I asked him why I didn’t get a bird guard and he said that would cost more !!

This was once the ladders were back on the van and they were rushing to the next job. He said he’d had a look about and didn’t see and small birds around, hahahah lol.

Just doesn’t look right to me. Anyway it is lovely and warm in here now.

That looks like a good job. The legs will be inside the pot and they have gone to the trouble of sealing around between the pot and the liner to stop water getting down… not many installers bother doing that.

bird guard could have been offered but birds don’t seem to like going down liners and if you are going to use the stove then the birds will stay away.

I think that looks good. I don't see it coming off, the mortar haunching round the top will lock it in well. Worry when the mortar starts to fall out in chunks in, hopefully, 25 years.

I'll go against the flow here. It looks a horrible cheap cowl and what if you end up needing an anti-downdraft cowl? Why on earth didn't they fit a proper hanging liner cowl, and what's supporting the liner? The stove isn't supposed to take the weight. Or am I mistaken about the cowl?

Hard work grinding mortar out of that pot now. Sometimes they just want to get on the next job asap and will use any old parts/materials to hand.

Here's the different methods of fixing a cowl:
