Conor
You can't reclaim the VAT and I doubt they will zero rate it. I got to the point of refusing to pay but they didn't back down.

nod
They should zero rate Some don’t want to or think they don’t have to I argued with the electricity company but they wouldn’t budge I told them the gas had zero rated So they agreed Then told the gas the same
Temp
Cannot reclaim VAT for any labor, should be zero rated to you. I would argue its demolition. VAT 708.. 3.3.4 Quote (a) allows the construction of the building to take place, such as when you: demolish existing buildings and structures as part of a single project to construct a new building or buildings in their place (the granting of a right to remove materials is not the supply of demolition services and is standard-rated)
Temp
You could also try asking on the HMRCs own VAT forum. I posted a link somewhere. Make sure to point out its part of the demolition process needed to allow construction of a new dwelling and ask if it should be zero rated under section 3.3.4 of VAT 708. I would be inclined not to include the quote itself. Just refer to it as the cost of taking down the overhead power line to the old house being demolished. CalvinHobbes
Thank you all so much, the guy at the power company is very good and has been really helpful too. I have sent him this and what the lady at HMRC has told me so hopefully he can update it. Temp great tip about the VAT forum, I will submerge myself in it!
