Grosey
Evening all, We are looking at creating something such as this - By purchasing something such as this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252356313733 and building it in, which is where the questions begin. The main rear wall is single skin block so no issues with it taking the weight of TV and fireplace. The queries really are regarding building all the boxing around the fireplace. The one in the eBay link is a full self contained unit, I may be over simplifying it but could I just build a frame from stud work, and line the boxing for the fireplace in vermiculite or something similar? Plasterboard the front. With the fireplace fixed to the rear block wall I could probably even create this so that no timber is actually in contact with the fireplace, it could just kind of float around it - hopefully that makes sense? All comments appreciated as always. Edited March 14, 2017 by Grosey Link updated
AliG
I looked a lot at bioethanol fires and decided that they were too much hassle and I was a bit worried re safety. I didn't like the idea of having to keep the bioethanol around and manually refill the fire. I have found this instead http://www.dimplex.co.uk/products/fires_surrounds/Opti-myst/cassette_600/index.htm Doesn't put out any heat. Looks pretty good from videos I have seen. lizzie
I have had bio ethanol. Won't bother again. I am going for the optmyst saw it in our local porcelanosa showroom was fantastically realistic I was amazed to find it was electric and ran on water. I gives out no heat so a simple suround construction to your own design is all that is needed no heatproofing and it can be as cheap and lightweight as you want to make it. I am sold on it and am having at least one in the new place.
Barney12
Very interesting. Looks like I'll have to see one in the flesh. @lizzie do the logs look real? In that video they look a bit "plastic"

Video below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnWFXS2lKs8 That optimist does look like quite a realistic system, but I'm after something contemporary, to create that long ribbon of fire look. It's a shame they don't have many products in the optimist range, the fake logs just aren't the look I'm after.
AliG
You can use stones or nothing. They also make a 1m long one for a long ribbon. See below for no logs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RIZgbVJLP8 For me I don't like devices that are a lot of hassle to use as I reckon they'll just sit there unused, it may be different in your situation, in which case I will bow out. The more automated bioethanol fires get ridiculously expensive.
Siochair
Does it have to be a real flame? Some of the LCD fires are quite smart.

Not necessarily, I've just moved on to looking at the LCD ones, but at the width I want 1000mm upwards they also start to get quite expensive. Its purely just as a focal point so heat output or any other features are very much secondary to realistic flame looks.

This could start to become expensive though! Are the logs an integral part of the top lid of the unit, or are they literally just a separate set of logs that sit on top and could be replaced by pebbles or whatever? I've just seen a video where after refilling the water they place the lid and logs back on as one piece...

Dimplex also do another fire lcd with a realistic crackle spark and flame effect, cant remember the model sorry as I decided against it, they have one of those lcd on display at the Swindon build centre. If you can get to see an optimyst working I think you will be impressed. I found a small size optymist on line for £400ish
AliG
I see what you are saying re the logs. I think looking at it, the logs sit on top of the cassette 500/1000 and can just be taken off, whereas they form the top of the 400 and 600 but it would be best to check with a dealer. The 500/1000 can also be plumbed in so that you don't have to manually fill them up with water.
