Frameless Glass Balustrade recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm looking for recommendations for suppliers of Frameless Balustrade systems.  I've got a 20m run to enclose a first floor balcony and a bit confused by all the options and the crazy prices so would welcome any steer on who offers a good value product.  Can this stuff be DIY installed or is it better to go for supply & fit?

You can DIY if you're confident but any mis-measurement / damage is on you.

If you supply and fit, the whole package can be zero rated for VAT.

Also, supply & fit will also measure up and it's on them if they make a mistake.

I think you need to decide on your style first - floor mounted or wall mounted? Continuous support (rail) or individual supports per panel?

I figured this was more of a specialist area so will plan on supply & fit.

As for the type the balcony is divided into 4 sections with columns supporting roof above and will be covered with ceramic tiles that drain to the leading edge. So balustrade will be mounted on a steel rail spanning approx 4 m between the vertical columns to allow a drainage gap between the floor tiles and base of the balustrade. I prefer the frameless type but need to pick something so the SE can design the steelwork to suit but I hope this does not end up looking too industrial.

TBH most local glass suppliers could do the laminated units to whatever size is specified, it's the measuring, fitting of the supports and then installing the glass that's the tricky bit.

We had internal & external glass fitted by a now bust firm. Even though they came and measured, they still cocked up quite a few panels but as it was on them I was not particularly fussed.

The kitchen backsplash glass was even worse - templated and about 60% of the glass went in the skip first time as had been ordered wrong. Took three more visits before it was all done.

Strangest part was it was keenly priced but no-one seemed that bothered about the endless mistakes. They went bust too :)

Lesson learned was to pay by CC as we got back some of the balcony install money that way when they couldn't resolve some snags.

I can PM you the freelance fitter who the balcony firm used, he was ace and did a great job despite being messed around (and eventually not paid) by the firm. Covers all of the UK I believe.
