I have 10-15 years to plan everything... how would you use the time?

No don’t, watch it to understand HOW NOT TO DO IT ?

I kind of meant it in jest but there was a more practical undertone. Since self-building, my head has been so full of questions and information on how to get it right, there's no room for how not to do it. But in any case, if you want to learn how to do something well, it's surely better to spend your time listening to and watching someone who's good at it, not someone who's crap at it, no? Understanding how not to do something doesn't get you anywhere, other than maybe some entertainment value from other peoples' disasters. ??

I haven't watched one of these programmes in probably 10 years now but one thing I did always wonder was how on earth so many people seemed to find an extra 300 - 500 grand or so behind the sofa to complete the project....

I sometimes wonder if the Grand Designs production team arrange soft loans to help get properties completed rather than having to write off a few years of filming.

We know from another thread here that they ship in loaned designer interior decor furnishings on occasions for the final happy-clappy grand reveal.

Most of the self builders are often drug dealers or people smugglers . Good money in those trades - always easy to find a bit extra cash in those jobs .

And if they get caught, I (we) pay for their board and lodging.

It is on my radar for when I get too old to look after myself.

Great advice so far, although obviously mixed in places... I'm reading books, gathering Pinterest Boards of ideas and the idea of staying in various holiday homes around the UK sounds like a great wy of researching ?

Never ever take your own advice.

I would still be a prisoner if I did the things I suggest to others.

I always take my own advice . Then I know I’ll always be wrong and it was my fault.

Generally they seem to be rich people on gifted land.
