Fixing for Sole Plate into concrete and Fixing for the Frames

Hi,

I gone for the option that carpenters construct Timber frame on site.

What fixing should they be using for

- Fixing sole plate to concrete upstand  (Some people say Thunderbolts is good, the other say no? )

- Fixing timber frames on to sole plate

I am using 50x125 C24 for all the framing.

Thank you!

Expanding sleeve anchors as long as you are not getting close to the edge of the blocks, otherwise chemical anchors (threaded rod set into resin) as these bond tightly to the concrete without causing spalling or cracking etc.

I used TimCo Expressnails (I believe they are a version of what the previous post describes). It looks like they work well - they certainly don't come out without a fight.

We used to erect quite a few commercial buildings so either:

3 or 4 inch annular ring nails using an air gun, or if we were using threaded rods chemical anchored in for the sole plate we would leave the rods over length, drill corresponding holes and fix with washer and nut .. bit more faffy but incredibly strong and easy to check / sign off after.

Thank you for the info, markc, dnb.

What did you use to fix the frame onto the sole plates? 1st fix nails ?

Shouldn’t this be confirmed in a nailing schedule drawn up by the structural engineer.

Who has designed the frame.

I built my last stick frame on site, you will have bracing walls that should require a different fixing down method as they do a different job.

It all depends on what functions the walls are performing.
