Joe68
Hi all, I've removed a 1930s tiled fireplace surround and fireback i just want to block it. I've removed it all and had to remove the fire back and some side bricks, it had a 10mm metal thickness beam across the chimney how safe is this will it support chimney breast. Any advice much appreciated photos below Edited May 11, 2020 by Joe68 Spelling
Russell griffiths
It’s been many years since I’ve done one of these, but I think you need to look at venting the old chimney some how or you can get a bit of damp. Someone else will know as own as I said long time ago.
ProDave
That flat bit of steel has been holding the bricks up for the last 90 years, so leave it there to continue doing so.
tonyshouse
Just brick it up cut back plaster 50 or 100mm replaster , traditional wisdom says to leave a hole 200x65 and fit an air vent, I no longer recommend this but open up a similar hole in the loft , if on outside wall fill the flue with pourable insulation eps, micafill etc insulate 600mm up chimney in the loft
