jamieled Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 Is there any guidance or wisdom out there concerning exposure of timber frames during construction? We've found ourselves in the situation of having the frame exposed for the next few weeks (probably about 4) until we can get up to roof level. Is there anything worth doing in terms of temporary protection or is it unnecessary? Located in northern ish Scotland.
Pete Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 I know somebody who bought the most basic timber frame and left it exposed for quite sometime while they did most of the external work and they suffered with the frame wood warping and twisting due to constantly getting soaked and drying out and made decorating a constant process for a number of years afterwards. Try and cover it up as much as possible and keep it dry!1
ProDave Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 Ours sat for the most of the first winter exposed outside. I wrapped the most exposed end in some damp proof membrane sheeting to keep most of the prevailing rain off.

jamieled Posted July 31, 2019 Author Posted July 31, 2019 Thanks all. We have it wrapped in building paper for now. I suspect we'll just have to see what the weather does and how the frame responds.
Hobbiniho Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 yeh should be no problem, just get a heater and dehumidifier in as soon as its wind and water tight and you shouldnt have any problems 1
