A bit of a progress with laying the base. Managed to get 6F2 down and wacked reasonably well although not sure how much soil was in the aggregate. It is relatively level but requires bedding I guess. Should I use sand or dry or wet mortar mix now for the pavers? A bit concerned about just sand due to the slope as you can see in the picture - the front is slightly above the ground already.

I can only concur with the point @Stones has made - without any finger pointing. There is no new gas - at least based on what I read about it. Whatever comes via Nordstream won't come via Ukraine. There are pipelines to Turkey and China, they have agreed volumes, not even sure whether EU can bid the price up to get a part of what Turkey gets. It is an unfortunate coincidence this year, true. But it does not mean current long term strategy is good. I personally think it is a complete madness to drop fossil fuels now or in the near future, there is no threat that can't be dealt with cheaper and more efficiently by other means. But it is too late.

Isn't a simple look at the price of oil over the last 30 years enough to show that inflation has certainly not been excessive in this very actively traded market? Volatility - yes, but not the price. Or to put it differently : we shot ourselves in the foot (and are planning to do more of that) by pretending we can do without fossil fuels way too soon.

Wow I didn't expect this from a person in the business. And we need to ban developers because housing speculation is bad. And a lot of other things. This really works well - banning. ☹️ As usual, the remedy that is worse than the illness. The law of unintended consequences is implacable.

This sounds like an RHI, not FIT

Mains Water Usage - What do you use?
oldkettle replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Our monthly average for 6 months up to April is 13250l for 4 working/studying from home, which makes it 109l/day pp. Hose used extremely rarely. Now, how do I fix the leaking toilet? ?- 30 replies

Thank you. Yes, I agree the sections are not heavy, it's only since I have to level the base anyway I am trying to do it reasonably well. No need for an extra root protection (i.e. vs tree roots) using a landscape one? Anything special I need to do to make sure I don't get water in from underneath apart from sealing the gaps between the pavers/around the sections?

Bump. Any advice?

A change of plans: after another discussion with a friend I've decided to position the garage on the opposite side where it will not be occupying the sunniest part of the garden. As shown in the picture, it's next to the conifers which I will cut heavily for now (most likely all the way to the trunk) thus giving me space to move the base closer. Then I will put aggregates down and cover with paving stones. There are a couple of questions - I hope somebody can advise. 1) I have textile membrane (the same I bought to put under the delivered aggregates) and plan to use it but taking into account the proximity of the trees is it worth putting down heavy duty landscape fabric first? 2) the difference in levels is significant - about 400mm over 5.5m of length. I don't want to build retaining walls around the base if possible. Can I lower the far side somewhat (200mm?), dig a little trench above it and fill it with gravel? Our ground is relatively free draining due to sand and likely the slope, I don't think there is a significant risk of flooding there. At least if I need to raise the bottom part 200mm above ground I won't need to worry much about the whole base moving as opposed to the full 400mm. A friend also suggested adding a mix (cement + sand) around the perimeter and letting the whole thing set naturally.

What do I need to know before buying aggregates?

bump can anybody confirm whether this looks like a proper 6F2? Used this yesterday to create ramps for the wheelbarrow and fines certainly look and feel like soil -

Got the delivery this morning. The good news is a 10t tipper had no problem getting in and the driveway is absolutely fine. Even the "lawn" which he had to go onto only gave about 30mm, no issues at all. A question: do these fines look OK for 6F2? I expected some metal or other larger items but this doesn't look like a crushed concrete Probably should clarify: feels like soil. -
Has anybody had their build measured on completion?
oldkettle replied to DragsterDriver's topic in Planning Permission
Well, this is all good when the "funder" is say a friend or a millionaire who has a way to enquire whether there are prospects. With crowd-funding people sending their £20 or £50 can't possibly know, this is for the person who goes to court and his solicitors to decide (whether to take money and continue). -

So my preferred (and recommended) supplier said they were not comfortable with the entrance/drive. Had to find a local company and getting 10t 6F2 tomorrow. He is asking for a pre-payment to what seems like his personal bank account - is this normal? -

I was actually thinking whether there was a way to crowd-fund the appeal: quite a few people can benefit if it is successful. -

I know and I agree. But It is still completely unjust taking into account the purpose of the levy and the reality of what the owner did: there were no new connections to services, this is just a replacement dwelling. Creating an overly complicated process just to give councils a chance like this one was wrong and the fact that the law was amended in 2019 means it was recognised. If only they did the right thing and made the retrospective change getting those of us who got planning before off the hook. -

This decision is a prime example of what "unjust" means. I do hope that the only reason the council were able to catch the owner is this "unauthorised work" claim. I.e. should the owner applied for the new planning before demolishing too much of the old building they would have been OK. -

well, to start with, the driveway is simply not wide enough for the truck! Fortunately, the entrance is - just. TBH, I hope they'll go backwards and the front wheels will be outside, but I doubt it will help much -

the best I can get is 16@370+VAT ? and the nice fella on the other end said that the drive was going to suffer. Well, will lift the pavers and push this MOT in then - it worked for ProDave (found an old thread). -

of course! I was thinking about lines in the order form or lines to collect and couldn't make sense of it. I thought that for a pro getting this right was not a problem. No idea why they'd not compensate -

How do you know you get 19? Is this on the documents he supplies? Sorry, this is professional lingo, a translation required for a diyer Sorry for "laughing" at the broken brickwork - I certainly wouldn't like this/see a funny side. But there is only one option for a reaction. -

Thank you Declan, this is what I thought. Not ideal but still cheaper than a separate order. -
