  1. I was thinking in theory, of exactly such a sleeve to protect just the foot or so @ ground level. All going well in the clip.. until he gets his flippin flame thrower out tho! Id not be able to shrink fit it tight without one, would I?
  2. Haha! no seriously, apart from this (easy to clear gravel from post areas for job).. I'm thinking doesn't the gates' height off surface/ driveway need to be established prior to gates being hung tho? or, you say just hang'em em with a ~4" gap below?
  3. I think you're right Ferdinand. Mulling it over, & considering the ultra-quiet 'wild west' area here.. bllx to it, I shall just replace my galvanised tube gate with woods ones (look way better so how could anyone have cause for complaint). Ive got a quote from Jackson's coming (might be costly with £42 postage). And seen some cheaper options in Huw's (my link before).. but not too impressed with quality. Jackson's have 25 year 'guarantee'.. not sure how so long if treated softwood, but sort of persuades me this direction. Ok so design chosen. And once quote got, then maybe gates got.. I can start asking about posts' installing. Height off ground is a critical one I guess: Ive yet to put down some sort of chipping gravel area here. Should this be done 1st I wonder? Cheers chaps.
  4. Ok that calms things down a bit. You see as Ive mentioned: Ive a total of 6 horrible n'bors close around me, who'll do -anything- at -any- opportunity to get at me max they can. The worst a retired architect (dog muck campaign little creep of a man) who'll scrutinise whatever I do on his 'domain'/ jurastiction/ area he's lived in for 30 yrs (so how dare I move in here etc) so it seems. I have to account for these creeps, whatever I do, so I dont get in a situation of having to remove X.. which will give them the goal they so desperately, pathetically want: stress to me.
  5. Ok thanks chaps. I still don't know if I need PP now. This has opened a can of worms. @Onoff.. but did you need, or apply for, or know to.. getplanning permission, to replace your gates?? And what H are yours then? they look over 2m to me.. I don't understand this.
  6. @Onoff same Q: did you need planning permission to put these in? did you apply? did you know you had to apply, or JFDI?
  7. Redoctober.. did you need planning permission to put these in? did you apply? did you know you had to apply, or JFDI?
  8. Peter.. did you need planning permission to put these in? did you apply? did you know you had to apply, or JFDI?
  9. Probably JFDI.. or probably I need PP? I cant cope with this.
  10. Right let me get this right. Deep fkn breath/ I loathe going thru these PP 'points' (so damn convoluted & not even the PP officer seems to tally with what these 'points' say- so how do I have a fkn chance?). Because I have a gate that's decrepid I can replace it w'out PP. But the old one's galvanised. So do I need PP? And as its over 1m high, as any damn gate is.. so I need PP regardless of vthe above-? For crying out fkn loud if I almost cant cope with the red tape of putting a fkn gate in.. how the hell am I ever going to be able to understand whether I can put a shed up??
  11. But any gate's over 1m high! (so every gate needs PP??) how did you do yours. that's looks well over 2m high..
  12. FFS I hate this f****ing planning sh*t. I cannot understand it. So I need fkn planning just to replace my damn gate?????!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. But your gates of mordor are far higher than I'm going though-? This place look like where
  14. This place look like where @Redoctober got yours from too maybe, from the nice curved uprights? Now an afterthought: I'm wondering if I can add a section onto the tops of both gates, for extra privacy (have to be lightweight/ to not add load to both gate's hang). IE if onto these curved uprights > across to a thin upright on each gates' meet end. Say an added 18" height or so "panel" across both gates. I have privacy issues, gone up a notch y'day when one n'bor waltzed thru my entrance, straight down past my house front, to my gdn where I was (complaining me playing acoustic gtr). So I hope maybe an extra level of 'barrier/ NO' as it were.. & also I get another nasty nationalist sod slowly driving by here/ staring into my property to provoke me. I can also see another horrible pair across road (putting dogmuck on my property, & car no less) who stare over hedge into my entrance at me: so a barrier added just up to head height, would be great to stop this intrusive behaviour. Could you tell me what the H of your gate is, to the top of the curve uprights?
  15. Those look great too & pretty much my size. Is that "60/40"? and what distance between your posts?
  16. @Onoff did you cut your scaffold plank biscuit rebate grooves.. with your elu tablesaw? is that the best method? I have a biscuit handjob (now behave) which is crap.. I can rarely align 2 edges perfectly.
  17. @Redoctober those look splendid as does your fine abode- lovely! And a great reference point cheers. Yes the idea is me to fit them.. saving ~approx £350 on your fine job there (as a guess let's say/ my '60' section not as looong). And I do like your bendy edge verticals: is the idea here the RHS one needed for structure/ extra bracing.. & the LHS one on the small side there solely to match the look of RHS one (rather than functional)? @Onoff I can't believe the lengths you go to- amazing, incredibly ambitious project that. Just a mite out of reach for me perhaps!
  18. Morning chaps- many thanks for the replies & information. Onoff those dragon gates!! (I'm getting a bigger picture of you now- & you get a smaller picture of me in rtn <). they look distinctly california US ott, so not thinking your back door gates! One other thing crops up, due to another invasion of privacy here y'day/ 2 n'bors waltzing thru entry area ^.. suddenly appearing whilst Im in garden & Im fed up with it.. so want a bit more 'barrier' now to my gates, but, not full Onoff look. Just maybe an extra bar like a 6-bar gate, & make to posts a bit bigger to hold. I'm going into all places tmrw (prolly only 2 most) to see what's available. Budget? let say £350 maybe? I'm not quite getting the 'clad-the-galvanised-gate' idea, Ive never seen or heard of this. Any eg's? thanks zoot schmoot.
  19. My 1st Q. if ideally I want to span bit less than 14' .. am I into a made-for-me gate, rather than anything likely to be 'off-shelf'?
  20. Hi chaps- be great to get help on a "typical" wood driveway gates job (maybe oak if I can stretch). Doubles, with bracket looping over to join & a pole into a ground hole to fix @ the join..? And 60 / 40 bc my car can't go back far (ie the 40 on the RHS so I can just get my car in the spot below). This sort of basic thing at a quick glance.. https://www.huwsgray.co.uk/shop/sawn-tanalised-5-bar-field-gate.html Here's the vacancy. I'm not looking for 'the best type' neccessarily, more affordable.. but still need to be of decent quality. Thanks, zoot schmootser
  21. And then that face pokes through! that's pretty neat I must say, but wouldn't gel: if I put this in I'd be muttered about even more than it is.
  22. That looks a formidable entrance to Onoff acres! nice wood that. too HD for me & my cottage. I go in-out on foot too alot, forest walks all around me, so a smaller section quickly opened/shut by hand needed I think, '40' the biggest I want: a '70/ 30' if I can do it ideal. Thanks anyway. I'll do a 'zoot's driveway gate' thread, & put a line to end this here.. pg4 already!
  23. Sliding gate: I had thought similarly only just now.. an idea, but not very cottager'y I thought, so will be boring old open-inwards's ones.
  24. Yes thats it Ferdinand for a thread header, simple as I guess. Couldn't spit the words out for some reason. So for the thread I need help how to find 60-40 of the 5-tier pine gates in that link, & then start asking about posts, tips, how to do & all that.. like postsaver I assume will be mentioned etc. (I can't see the picture, still got my green Z. am I not allowed to view my own arse on here? what's the fkn world come to. I want to add a sign off ditty too.. but no idea how).
  25. Ok this sort of thing, but 60/40 (I can only just get car in, & gates closed in this config). these square posts look good too. https://www.huwsgray.co.uk/shop/sawn-tanalised-5-bar-field-gate.html So can you sum up what I need, wordwise, so I can do a thread? "tannanised field driveway gates job- to do".. ain't gonna cut the mustard.
