I've been thinking about home security recently. its got me thinking that my home which i thought was secure may not be at all. I have a Hkc alarm system which is supposed to be a good alarm. what worries me though is the alarm panel is near the front door. what's to stop a burglar from just ripping it off the wall and throwing into water? would the internal/ external alarm sirens still sound if this were to happen? my house has thumb turn locks with a letterbox and I've just saw videos of people using tools to reach through the letterbox and unlock the front door. So a burglar then has 30 seconds entry time to rip my alarm panel of the wall then there free to walk around my home. could this actually happen? or am i worrying for nothing? If anyone has any good suggestions to improve my security I would be grateful.

Ok so it makes sense why its not water tight around the inner seal. I've the door compressing a bit tighter now although it doesnt look water tight to be honest. As i said above the sealent at bottom of the frame is peeling. that could be my main problem area?
-
thanks for the reply. actually that makes sense. I have the door compressing tight now at the bottom it wasn't very tight. I have noticed that the bottom of the frame had some sealant where it sits on the threshold but that's peeling away. I'm thinking that would allow water to enter the threshold. would it be a bad idea to run a bead of silicone along the bottom of the inner seal and frame, to stop water from getting inside?

thats actually the sill you see outside its all in one. threshold/sill. ill get a pic tomrorow when its light

My front door is letting water in when it rains heavy. The water gets into the threshold and drains ok but if too much water gets in, it finds its way into the house filling the channel where the inner seal sits and over flowing into house. Anyone have any idea what I could do to fix this issue. I marked with a blue line in the picture where the water seeps through into the house, fills underneath the channel where the seal slots into.

Thanks for the reply would of been handy though if it existed

Hi bit of a strange question. friend of mine bought a house a few years old. House was plumbed for an en-suite but never connected ( pipes are inside walls supposedly) is there anyway one can get a hold of the plumbing drawings somehow? For an older house? would make plumbing the en-suite handier he thinks.

yes my house has press fittings but also they have used compression. I'm in Ireland, I think its an Irish company probably not very popular. They sell an adaptor/insert that can be used on standard compression fittings. looks to be very handy especially for the DIY type like me.

Did i ask a stupid question?

Hi i want to do some work in my home, its plumbed in Mlcp. I want to use compression fittings. Im looking into purchasing some adaptors so i can use standard compression fittings. my question is can i use any brand adaptors or does it have to be from the makers of the pipe? I heard that some of the pipes can be different sizes even though there 16mm? thanks

I had a look at there website I couldn’t find it. Is there any other companies that do a similar one?

Anyone know where I can get an exact match for this sill? Anyone know the brand? I think it’s made from aluminium
-
I haven’t a clue all the windows are like that and it’s a new house only a few years old. The beading is also cut too short on the outside with large gaps
-
Hi guys, What is the correct filler sealer to seal those gaps on my Upvc frames? The beading is on the outside of the frame. I’m getting cold air and noise coming through

My house is new and has ventilation system. Should that make a difference? I actually thought it was standard practice for a vapour control layer on Ceiling considering I have one on my external walls. Defeats the purpose of having one on the walls?
-
What’s 330? Is that foam?
-
Shouldn’t there a vapour control layer to stop moisture rising and also prevent draughts? In an ideal world I suppose.
-
No there’s isn’t access. Any tips on finding out where the leaks coming from? Are the wall to ceiling junctions a weak point?
-
I’ve a ground floor extension and I noticed I’ve a nasty draught coming from one of my smoke alarms, it’s a cold roof above it. I’d imagine this shouldn’t be happening as my house is supposedly air tight. the extension came with the house. how would I go about fixing this? finding the source of the leakage? Or is it impossible and just forget it.

Thanks for the reply. I actually prefer the constant heat in the house with WC. I sometimes think certain heating engineers know less than let on about these systems.
-
Thanks for the replies. Some of that stuff is very complicated for an idiot like me. Is it ok to run radiators on weather comp? I had a heating engineer out recently and he said weather comp is only for underfloor heating. I should run it at a fixed flow of 45 with it turning off and on.

It’s. 3 story new build with radiators and a 4kw split heat pump.
