Ah, but it never goes above 50 degrees according to the dial on the TS. UFH pump is running and that top green thing is red hot again. Is the boiler supposed to switch off when it reaches temperature? It's scaled back to 18kw now.
-
Tea? I need voddy, and anyway we're already at 43 degrees so only 7 degrees to go .......... Guesstimates for ETA?
-
So you want me to turn the temp on the boiler itself down from 70 to 65 and leave all the cylinder stats at zero? CST is already at max.
-
Crap! I think Apollo 13 did manage to return to earth after the oxygen explosion. Just hope my TS can do the same!
-
Nope, but it does fire up if I turn the cock thermostat up. And it also fires up with the highest cylinder stat (1) set to min with the cock thermostat turned up ........ 24kw power on display.

Yep, all good, they all click at about 30. And I didn't need to open the back door and freeze to death .......
-
Don't think so . I can open the back door and make it freezing? Always bloody cold in Scotland anyway .
-
It hasn't come on but I didn't think it would as it doesn't come on anyway if the cock thermostat is turned right down, I have to keep that one turned right up as it switches the boiler off if the boiler room gets warm (which surprise surprise it tends to!). I have no idea why he put a bloody thermostat there! So I can turn stat 3 to 65 but I don't think anything will kick in until the cock thermostat is turned back off. Can try it tho!

Boiler is back on. Ran for a couple of mins. Set temperature is still 70, return and flow temperature were both 33, flow rate was 21 l/min, power consumption 0. Then after a couple of mins it is in sleep mode with flow rate now 0 l/min and other settings the same as before. So all to plan (I think!). Now moving onto 7 ....... the only heating time controls I know about are the 2 that the cock put in so both of those are going on (one will fire the boiler, the other will switch on the UFH pump).

Right, the TS is at 20 so I'm ready to rock. As a point of note it dropped 10 degrees from 50 to 40 with the boiler and UFH pump switched off between 9am and 6.30pm so 9.5 hours. Between 6.30pm and 8.15pm it dropped from 40 degrees to 20 degrees with the pump running (but all room thermostats switched to 'frost'). The top green pump marked UP became red hot with the pump running. I know cos my hand says so still! It wasn't that hot earlier and the 'DOWN' one is about the same temperature as before. The 3 TS cylinder stats are turned down to zero. The top one was at 80 and the other 2 were 70. The number 70 is ringed on all 3 so I imagine they were all supposed to be set to 70. TS is at 20 so am I now ready for number 6? I can switch the boiler back on but it won't attempt to fire up and heat as only heats when the 'cock in the cupboard' time switch is set, and that is set to off just now. Do you need me to leave that off @Nickfromwales when I first switch the boiler back on and wait the 15 mins?

Once I get the invoices back from HMRC I will dig out the invoice and see what it says.

Yep, absolutely! You never like the thought of not being around to deal with things but ultimately as my case proves shit does sometimes happen and as my hubby was into that sort of technology I never got involved in any of it. He had said that he would try to document various things for me 'when the time came' but when it came down to it he didn't want to admit when that time was, and then he became too sick to do it. Document everything as you go as it's then ultra easy either to recap or pass the documents onto others which will cover moving house too, not just more tragic circumstances! I work in IT and we use KIS a lot (keep it simple), but then we also use FUBAR and SNAFU a lot too .
-
Also, thanks for alerting me back to the blog as I noticed that hubby had his full address in his profile! Have been able to log on and amend.
-
Nope they are in the same position as the photo so not sure if they've never been on or have been switched off at some point!
-
Or not as the case may be in my house . Thanks. I'm all set for the test. Just need to know: UFH pump off or on (on will drain hot water out PDQ) - it's still at about 40 at the mo or it was about an hour ago. Solar heating off or on? I know it doesn't appear to heat the water but it's whiring away in there today with the pump thing hot. Was actually sunny in Scotland .
-
Ah yes. I don't think the plumber knew what he was doing with this type of system either so it was like the blind leading the blind between him and my hubby. And no, it wasn't bloody ready when I moved out of the rental flat! I think the moral of this sorry tale is, don't over engineer things if you don't have the knowledge to see them through properly. My hubby liked to over engineer everything however as he saw it as a challenge. Unfortunately this system defeated him!

There is an in line water softener (no idea if it works) but I think I’m in an area with pretty soft water (never any scale in the kettle) so not sure whether things have scaled up. The photo was when it was being being installed hence the extra parts on top.
-
Actually Google is my friend . Says it's a solar hot water circulating pump.
-
It's on the label says Wilo Star Z - 15. Part number 4110915/09w 39
-
Couple of things to clarify please: What are these? I had to take 3 photos of the top thing as it was difficult to reach. And what’s the black thing in the 4th photo?
-
I think that was sort of the idea with the controllers that guy put in. Not so much to coincide with the cheap rate, but to allow me to control the off and on to ensure that I had some chance of having hot water when needed. If there was a separate pump that switched on for the taps that would be half the battle.
-
I just stood in the boiler room with a printout of @Nickfromwales plan of attack. I would quite like to attack the whole thing with a sledgehammer but perhaps that's not wise ...... So this morning I switched off the boiler and pump using the controls installed by 'cock in the cupboard'. I have set every room thermostat to 'frost' so off. I've stood in the room and read through the notes. I am going to label everything up but my observations and bits I didn't understand are: Not 100% sure where this is TBH. I think this is one of the main issues. I don't think there is a hot water clock setting or a flow switch. If I open a tap no hot water arrives unless the UFH pump is switched on. @PeterW said that he thinks he knows what is wrong here in an earlier post. The green pumps have UP and DOWN on them respectively. Assuming the red topped thingies (there are 4 of them) are those bright red things that say heatguard UFH and assuming the little notch in the metal is where to set the temp they are all set at max (65). There is UFH upstairs as well as downstairs (no radiators anywhere). And there are 4 sets of manifolds covering a quarter of the house each. Assuming the Quenching coil is that thin silver thing coiled round it is leaking slightly. Hardly at all so you don't really notice it but that where all the scale comes from I think. Not a major issue in the great scheme of things! I'm not sweating the small stuff . I can't see any 'clocks' anywhere. If it ain't on their invoice where would they have come from unless included with the TS? I think I'm ok with your instructions but there are a couple of things that I want to clarify using photos so will do so in the next post. I will give it all a whirl when I finish work. Do I need the UFH pump on or off when I do this? Incidently, I can make the TS go cold as quick as you like if I have the UFH pump on without the boiler running. Even if all of the room thermostats are set to 'off' and 'frost' the water disappears out of the store (but where?). That's the issue with the TS really. It doesn't seem to store hot water at all. So I can't have it off for 2 hours and still have hot water available for that period. Boiler and pump has been switched off since 9am so 6 hours. temperature has dropped from 50 to 40 and the room temperature in this room has dropped less than 1 degree from 19 to just over 18. Oh and @ProDave I now know why I can't get those bloody screws out. They are tork screws. So no matter how many phillips screwdrivers I tried they weren't going to work! Who knew there would be so many different types of screws! Despite rummaging through dozens and dozens of screwdrivers and screwdriver bits in the Aladin's cave of shite (aka the garage) I can't find the right size so have ordered yet more bloody screwdrivers from Amazon, due to arrive tomorrow.

Most of the rooms are turned off. Will this do (see pic) instead of 'turn down'? As in the frost setting on only. I'm actually here all day tomorrow but I can still turn everything off in the morning as you suggest. Better wear some warm clothing though I am not 100% sure I understand all of your 'what to do next' advice. I will read it all again tomorrow. Head spinning a bit from all of this today

Is this an important thing or something I can leave? I don't see lights dimming when the boiler is on. There are loads and loads of downlighters everywhere but TBH I tend not to use them much. I use other lighting mostly.
