  1. Something like this? https://www.drainagesuperstore.co.uk/product/kform-k85-screed-rail.html Or? https://www.premiumtiletrim.co.uk/product/p-v-c-plastic-screed-expansion-joint-msr--beige-insert--by-genesis
  2. Science should not be biased though unfortunately the climate change band-wagon/gravy-train has strayed from pure science. The pushback from the right is driven by a general distrust of "corporate media (CNN/BBC/New York Times)" that talks with one voice on a range of subjects and also by a distaste of liberal power exercised through supra national organizations. The rise of populist politics expressed through the ballot box in recent years will likely react against the climate change lobby based on a similar mechanism. When the same condescending voices on CNN berate a large segment of the population as homophobic, misogynist, racist bigots and then continue with a lecture on climate change in the next sentence the message gets lost. Climate change is far too important to become just another prop through which the global elite to demonstrate their Prius driving moral wonderfulness.
  3. Yup, make sure you don't create the neighbourhood Rat Hotel.
  4. Since posting I have been wondering if there is a downside. If such a slot encourages movement to occur at the slot and UFH pipes run through the slot is there a danger of local stress fatigue to the pipes at that point?
  5. I have been thinking about this but did not realize it was a known construction option. Can the joint be formed using the same material used for floor screed edge insulation?
  6. In another thread @PeterWmentioned fibres don't add much to the cost, < 10% extra per ton.
  7. A sentiment you share with Patrick Moore as he explained his departure from Greenpeace but apparently according to this thread he is a controversial scalawag who cannot be trusted.
  8. Just watched about half of that... useful. My takeaways are that the slide at 18:00 minutes acknowledges the role of biosphere carbon fixation (co2 extraction) but unlike the videos in my OP the presenter of your video just views this bio fixed carbon as a raw material for a more powerful overriding mechanism. I think he is saying volcanoes have been the random jokers in climate stability, weathering of carboniferous rocks leading to co2 release is the regulatory correcting mechanism and long term solar cycles give us predictable glaciation cycles. I wonder if the science has evolved over the past 10 years to the point where a biosphere triggered decline in co2 is now more apparent? Your video does not address whether photosynthesis based life was nearly snuffed out during the last ice age when co2 fell to a record low. What is amusing in this debate is the more strenuous the effort to debunk the OP videos about co2 decline the more man-made global warming is marginalized as alternative climatic regulatory mechanisms are introduced to explain the longterm co2 levels. What is confirmed to me by reactions to my thread (apart from yourself) is that the age of enlightenment and reason is over in our western world. Belief is now based on tribal allegiance and intellectual tyranny reinforced by public spending and new laws that have criminalized free speech. We have regressed 400 years to influence via threat, think I need to incorporate a 21 century priest hole in my self build.
  9. That almost sounds like Climate Change Denier dialogue as heard on Fox News. I am not sure what prompts you to explain co2 decline in terms of (1) The Sun (2) Tectonic Uplifts (3) Natural Cycles when there is a much simpler explanation on offer namely the earth's own biosphere fixing carbon in the crust, just look at the White Cliffs of Dover. Where I think we agree is that on a much shorter timescale there are more pressing concerns. It is legitimate for alternative thinkers to remind us that co2 has been much higher in the past and that co2 is a lagging indicator of temperature change but with 7 billion humans inhabiting an overcrowded world even minor climatic adjustments could kill off 1 billion of us.
  10. If you had your finger on the pulse of these matters you would know that the effort by Greenpeace to disinherit one of its co-founders has been debunked by an archived copy of the Greenpeace web site. This 2007 copy of their own history lists Patrick Moore as a co-founder, in fact he is the only co-founder with a related academic background. https://web.archive.org/web/20070203080000/http://www.greenpeace.org/international/about/history/founders He is only controversial because as a foundational member of environmental activism from the 1970's he then split from Greenpeace saying:
  11. No you scanned the article and posted the one graph with the most logarithmic distortion of the underlying truth, namely a long term downward trend in co2 levels has occurred. You then traded insults on the mechanism by which the concept is presented rather than consider or comment on the the underlying theory.
  12. Err, the point being raised here is that all these pesky, fossil fuel burning humans are saving the planet from an otherwise predictable demise when all the green stuff dies due to a lack of co2 to drive photosynthesis.
  13. Ah ha. Having scanned the Nature article I note you were selective with your evidence, another graph in that same article illustrates the validity of my opening post and YouTube caliber science, here is the graph of declining co2.
  14. The logarithmic x-axis distorts the true picture with regular glacial cycles of steadily decreasing amplitude (y-axis CO2) as the earth's biosphere locks more carbon away. Presumably you do not contest the underlying claims that (1) biological processes are steadily capturing co2 and fusing the carbon away in the earth's crust and (2) at some point co2 levels will diminish to the point that photo synthesis fails and it is game over for all life on earth. An often voiced criticism of climate change science is the group-think, this is the product of politics and money. I watched a great interview with a group of ex NASA climatologists at or beyond retirement age, they were scathing of the scientific consensus on climate change and explained that for the past 30 years it has been impossible to develop a career in this branch of science without subscribing to the mainstream belief system. The international politics and money has purchased a consensus. The two people interviewed in those YouTube videos are: Dr. Patrick Moore (the Founder of Green Peace) William Happer (Proffesor of physics at Princeton University)
  15. I stumbled on some YouTube videos this morning that cover a new subject for me, The Carbon Deficit. In brief the claim is that global CO2 levels are in a longterm decline that started with the arrival of life on planet earth. Overlaid on this longterm trend there is a CO2-glaciation fluctuation and at the most recent CO2 low point the level dropped to 180 which is just 30 points above the threshold at which photosynthesis is possible. The theory claims that on trends prior to the industrial revolution life on earth will be extinguished in a few millions years during a future glaciation cycle when the atmospheric CO2 level drops below this critical photosynthesis level. Where has the carbon gone? Well since the beginning of life on earth much of it has been incorporated in fossil fuels and the remainder is locked in carboniferous rocks which again are the result of marine life. The theory concludes that human beings burning fossils fuels is the key to reversing this deadly trend, also cement production is the most significant human activity for liberating CO2 from carboniferous rocks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXxktLAsBPo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-9UlF8hkhs https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/06/30/life-on-earth-was-nearly-doomed-by-too-little-co2/
  16. Just been looking at the Hep20 Site Guide you linked to earlier, would the conduit you mention be the red "pipe in pipe" product shown in that guide? I like the guide BTW, part of the challenge of self building is to avoid wasting time by eliminating options and focusing. Until now I had not realized that Hep20 was a pushfit system, previously I had only encountered that on boats.
  17. Even a modern plastic airbrick? We had mice and squirrels in our previous rental house.
  18. A Google search for "Hep20 rodent" suggests there is a problem. My inclination is still towards plastic based on diy simplicity, I am just trying to quantify this opposing view heard yesterday. He commented on price saying the extra cost of plastic connectors offsets the copper price overhead.
  19. They are equipped with on-board neural networks of moderate complexity that have been trained across millions of years of evolution to find the one chink in your thermal envelope.
  20. Thanks, will do. I took that approach with my first MDPE underground mains feed plumbing which went well until I hit the PhilMac pit of despair. The sunny uplands of Plasson and Floplast are ahead. The good thing about living onsite is the someone like me, who has never changed a tap washer in his live, can practice on static caravan plumbing then gravitate to gardenshed plumbing before the important stuff starts. I have already learned: The plastic in pushfit waste pipes is very different to that in solvent weld pipe. A 110mm pipe end chamfer tool is essential. The @JSHarris method of marking a 110mm pipe square for cutting is brill. 25mm MDPE pipe does not like tight bends or being persuaded to connect across any misalignment. Before commencing any underground mains plumbing fill a few buckets of water for cleaning joints before turning off the meter stockcock and cutting the pipe. The thickness of my index finger under a 1.2m spirit level = a 1 in 80 soil pipe gradient. You don't need any fancy stockcock tap extension arm to reach a modern meter stopcock at the roadside because they have one built in. The degree of technical advancement between PhilMac connectors and the same from Plasson is equivalent to that between a Sedan Chair and a Tesla automobile. Brut force is required to securely crimp a copper olive down into 25mm MDPE pipe, I had one connection at mains pressure pop open under the caravan though fortunately I heard the water within 2 minutes so just a minor flood. Freezing risks with plastic pipe are overstated ( at-least for temporary setups).
  21. My plumbing questions feel too lowbrow compared to many hi-tech debates here, e.g. where would I favour a 40mm waste pipe over 32mm?
  22. This is interesting because after posting yesterday I decided I had reached an unproductive mental road block re. plumbing so I drew a diagram and headed off to my local traditional iron mongers which is a quaint establishment, think of the Two Ronnies 4 candles/fork handles sketch. The iron monger is run by an ex. plumber and he likes offering advice to a near clueless self builder. Like any pro he knew there were multiple options for hooking together 25mm MDPE, a washing machine and 1/2" copper garden tap. Since I have copious amounts of MDPE pipe onsite and a box of horrible PhilMac connectors that I will not trust in the main build, my new Worker's Onsite Laundry Facility (Garden Shed) is now to be plumbed as follows: Blue 25mm MDPE pipe > PhilMac stop tap > more 25mm pipe > PhilMac T connector. Washing machine T branch = MDPE to ¾ thread adapter" as recommend by @Miekin another thread > standard washing machine flexible cold feed hose. Garden tap branch = 8 foot length of 25MM MDPE pipe along internal shed wall > copper compression adapter down to 15mm copper pipe through shed wall > 90 degree copper compression elbow > 6" of copper 15mm pipe > garden tap. And on to Hep20. The said ex plumber / shop owner offered a strong dislike of Hep20 because of rodents. To prove this he pointed to an area of the shop ceiling and explained how rodents chewed through a plastic pipe next door which led to the flooding of the shop. I wish I had not heard his views because I had previously settled on Hep20 due to the system being favoured by regulars here. What is the forum's viewpoint and the rodent Hep20 risk?
  23. Sound is a recognized torture technique just a few hours can be effective, ask the CIA. After a couple of days and a few thousand thunks it is a no relevance that you view the job as a one-off. You say you were nearly finished when they sought confrontation but again you fail to perceive the world from their side. As they sat at home for hours getting progressively more wound up each time you fired the gun how were they meant to use psychic powers and conclude just another 300 nails to go? The teenage drummer is not an equivalent source of annoyance because the local community will know through experience that he gets bored after 30 minutes and does not get out of bed before noon so they will be able to time-box the irritation and cope with it. Your noise was irregular unlike drumming and not quantifiable in duration because you did not communicate beforehand.
  24. Household sizes are in longterm decline and coupled with the UK's demographic wealth bulge presently (60's and 70's), this all points to 3 beds being the marketable sweet spot in home sales. Watch a few episodes of Escape To The Country and this soon becomes apparent.
  25. I said much the same to Swmbo as soon as the end of program credits started rolling. They endured a tough prolonged build with family separation and now they can only look forward to 6 years of settled family life before the layout limits of the house become apparent. Then as they prepare to move they won't be able to realize a decent sum for the house because of the odd materials and design decisions. This is where I disagree with a few posters, I liked the finished style. The minimalist look could be a Germanic/Central European influence and the mother earth roughcast finishing is a reflection of to their ethical/eco values. The Ted Moult Everest Windows/Hygena Kitchens generation wants to sanitize nature and live in mm perfect hermetically sealed isolation, in contrast the couple featured know where home decor is going.
