bmj1 Posted yesterday at 16:17 Posted yesterday at 16:17 Any recommendations for the best lightweight concrete blocks for tiling marble onto ? I.e. that can take the weight - ideally on both sides - without reinforcement. Would consider anything <=140mm wide Thank you in advance
Temp Posted yesterday at 18:26 Posted yesterday at 18:26 I've put 12mm travertine onto cement boards on timber stud walls. I think most blocks will be ok. Unless you're using something much thicker. See what others say.

bmj1 Posted yesterday at 18:57 Author Posted yesterday at 18:57 (edited) I'm worried about 20mm marble on both sides due to the load exceeding the rated amount for the blocks per m2. Lightweight blocks is cheaper to construct and also less weight so reduces loads, otherwise might need to thicken up the steel frame Edited yesterday at 19:04 by bmj1

I have thick tiles on a stud wall and plasterboard - no steel in sight. So confused what you are or aren't doing
saveasteading Posted yesterday at 20:59 Posted yesterday at 20:59 Any blocks will be capable. When you say steel and reinforcement are you implying that the wall itself may need more support underneath?

The combination will add so much load we might need to revise and thicken the steel frame for the building. All I was trying to ask was which lightweight block product can take the most load.

Still no idea what you are doing - over thinking or a real design issue, is it 1 m² or 100m², ground floor, 1st floor, what is the steel doing?
Mr Punter Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I would use medium density blockwork. It is about 1400-1600kg/m3. Your marble will be about 2700kg/m3. With 2 layers of 20mm tiles and a bit of adhesive on 100mm blocks, you will be around 260kg/m2. If you did porcelain it could be 10mm. I would not want to tile onto aircrete blocks. 1
