Pocster
Hey all, Been looking into this. I do like : https://www.sunsquare.co.uk/skylights-and-rooflights/upstand/ But the up stands are £200!!! . They are just 4 bits of wood (maybe insulated I guess). Surely no one pays that much for them?. Some suppliers don't supply the upstand - should I just make my own?. What's everyone else done with sky lights/walk on glass?? Cheers Edited January 24, 2018 by pocster

lizzie
Just out of interest have a look at what it says about the upstands here....structural for safety etc I know this product is not exactly what you are looking for but see what they say about upstands ....structural integrity with insulation is one of the things we discussed when we were considering the walk on roof lights. https://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/product/reflex-walk-on-rooflight-no-anti-slip-1500mm-x-1000mm-privacy.html If your architect cannot be more specific why not ask a friendly flat roofing company that install walk on roof lights for their thoughts on the issues. My bro in law has a specialist commercial roofing company and he was very helpful to us in answering these sort of questions

TBH I would prefer the up stand supplied then it’s one less thing to make !!
jamiehamy
I just made my own upstands from 4x2 and some PiR, very straightforward. My blog has pics of the install. I used Skylight International, who are based in Glasgow and do this type of stuff all the time. They quoted us for a Skylight for the garage that you could walk on, pretty reasonable. The product is lovely.

PeterW
You need to know what they are being designed for - from your picture you want flush roof lights that are set into a solid concrete surface. The kerbs for this are very different to the kerbs for those set onto a timber roof with a membrane and potentially something like a green roof around them. Detail is the key here as done wrong, they will leak !!! Can you post a section of the buildup of the roof around the roof light from the architects spec and at least with that you have a chance to get some informed decisions. Here's the only detail for the roof/drive. So the roof lights up stands must sit on the beam & block floor ( suspect I will need to build this up with blocks to get the height) the roof lights cant be driven on so foot traffic only ! Pocster
Right!, Been looking into this more!. Certainly not paying nearly 1K for 4 up stands! They do seem simple enough to build. My plan, (I need to gain maybe 25cm). Is to put concrete blocks around the opening then make wooden 'wedges' to gain the slope. Wedges can be 'open' so insulation can be inserted. Ply on both sides to hold insulation in place. Also (as this is a driveway i.e. with chipping for driveway blocks) ; insulation outside around the upstand to increase u but also to protect EDPM from chipping. Internally insulated plasterboard up to glass. Hence why a good few companies don't sell up stands (I guess no-one pays 200 quid for 4 bits of wood!) Indeed the up stand doesn't seem the most complex thing to build (not even for me!). I guess the real key is that the EDPM goes at least half way up it.
