chilliMin Posted Friday at 21:47 Posted Friday at 21:47 Hi all, Aspring self-builder in the Borders. Fan of the Barcelona Pavilion and Brutalism (sorry if that offends anyone!), hoping to build something along those lines. My background is in science, so I'm thinking in terms of energy, water efficiency, passive thermal management... Also interested in using as many commodity items as possible to keep costs down and simplify maintainance. I like vindaloos and minimalism, hence the name. Thanks admin for approving my account! 4
Redoctober Posted Saturday at 09:22 Posted Saturday at 09:22 Hi @chilliMin welcome to the forum. The project sounds exciting and interesting. We will no doubt look forward to you sharing your experiences as well as offering support and guidance, mixed with some honesty on ocassions. 1

TheMitchells Posted Saturday at 16:34 Posted Saturday at 16:34 (edited) Looking forward to hearing all about the build! Though I did have to look up what Barcelona Pavilion and Brutalism would look like....😄 Edited Saturday at 16:34 by TheMitchells 1
chilliMin Posted Saturday at 20:01 Author Posted Saturday at 20:01 Thanks guys and thanks @TheMitchells - I had to check how to spell 'pavilion' - I thought it was double L, but apparently not! Â
SteamyTea Posted yesterday at 08:40 Posted yesterday at 08:40 Welcome  I ate a Carolina Reaper whole and raw, then did not drink anything for 10 minutes. I prefer the Gaudi stuff in Barcelona. 1
saveasteading Posted yesterday at 09:24 Posted yesterday at 09:24 IMO Brutalism is fun to look at but not economic or practical. You, might borrow some aspects though for effect. eg A concrete pier with the formwork marks showing. I don't see the BP as Brutalism, but as a simple structural form. Too much glass for a house. Also far too flat a roof for your location....any location really. Where does the rain go? I'd build it in steel or timber once I knew more about your space intentions, with some slope to a gutter at the back... I know, philistine.  But if you want it to last more than 20 years...  These famous Architects designed very expensive sculptures, not practical buildings. 1
chilliMin Posted yesterday at 12:48 Author Posted yesterday at 12:48 Good effort @SteamyTea ! I can munch half a Thai Green ok, a Scotch Bonnet would be a bit masochistic for me!! Gaudi's too twiddly for me, but it's probably amazing and inspiring to visit Barcelona for a week.  Fun to look at is part of the plan @saveasteading - if I actually go ahead with it I'll be looking to sell quite quickly and build #2. How's that for naive optimism? 🤣 Rain could pour of a corrugated roof into a fish pond or a gravel bed (cheaper), but you're right - it will pool in places and lead to corrosion. If the design doesn't allow roof panels to be replaced easily it'll be a bad design. I still think the Modernist dream is worth pursuing...
