Big Jimbo Posted October 25 Posted October 25 I was proposing UPVC frames, with tripple glazing. I am unfortunately proposing that my most glazed elevation is West facing. This means that i am currently failing my Part "O". I dont want shading by way of, shutters, overhangs, or external blinds. That leaves me with Solar Glass to mitigate the overheating. I usually use Modern UPVC for supplies, but as they are closed, i cant ring them, or find from the webside if they do solar glass. I know that everest now do tripple glazing as standard, but it says on the website that they dont do solar glass. Any idea of a firm that does decent UPVC, decent price, and solar glazing ? The house will be sold on completion, as i have permission for Two, and intend keeping the other One. Am i going to keel over when i find out the price of solar control glass ?
SteamyTea Posted October 26 Posted October 26 I would have though that the first thing to know is by how much you need to reduce the light transmission to reduce the overheating risks. A random google though up this. Picking the first on the list got this. Silver 20 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION Total Solar Energy Reduction 80% Solar Energy Reflected 50% Solar Energy Absorbed 39% Solar Energy Transmittance 11% Visible Light Transmittance 16% Visible Light Reflected 58% Ultraviolet Light Reflected 99% Shading Coefficient .28 Solar Heat Gain Coeff. (g Value) .24 Emissivity .70 Winter U-Factor (W/m² ºC) 2.82 Glare Reduction 82% I suspect that actual product would make a room quite gloomy, but there are other products. Maybe our resident glazing man @craig can throw some light (or paint) on it. 1
Gone West Posted October 26 Posted October 26 13 hours ago, Big Jimbo said: Am i going to keel over when i find out the price of solar control glass ? We used the Vista film from Sun-X. It had a noticeable cooling effect on our west facing triple glazed gable at our last place. I'm sure there are probably comments on here somewhere about it, but it was several years ago now. https://www.sun-x.co.uk/window-film/solar-window-film 1
Nick Laslett Posted October 26 Posted October 26 Here are the bookmarked threads I have on this topic. We have Suncool SN70/35 coated glass, which still lets in some heat. Visually on the inside it has no impact. 2
craig Posted Monday at 09:34 Posted Monday at 09:34 (edited) Solar glass is a minefield of different options/coatings etc. I try to avoid it if and when possible (which isn't always the case) but options exist. Most glazing suppliers will offer solar coatings but not all do (such as Everest). Why do I avoid? Light transmission, Solar coatings really darken up the glazing units and I personally don't like the look. I'd much rather go for external shading components, such as trees, brise soleil, canopies etc. Edited Monday at 09:36 by craig 1
