I've got two different basins. One is Ideal Standard and the other is Ikea. The Ideal has a lever pop-up mechanism for the plug and the Ikea one is a pop-up. Both suffer from repeated and regular clogging up so I'm forever having to take them apart to manually clean out. I've basically had to remove the whole plug mechanism from the Ideal one in the ensuite so my wife isn't happy. I've never ever had this problem before so must be down to designs?

Are Macalpines good and reliable - or is there another brand I could use instead?

Modern wastes typicalpy have something in the middle of the plug hole to operate the mechanism and that provides more places for hair to get caught on. A good old fashioned plug on a chain type might work better?

Open Grid / Freeflow Basin Waste

Looks like a simple ring or grid with no moving parts and no central bar for hair to wrap on.

Used in public restrooms and some commercial settings for this reason.

Examples:

McAlpine Freeflow Basin Waste (UK)

Unslotted Open Flow Waste (various plumbing brands)

But watch out for earrings and the like disappearing into the trap.

Yeah, I might just have to do that. My other thought was if I could get something that works like the kitchen sink as we have no problems there.

Good old ChatGPT - I ought to try that more often. I'll have a look at those! Ta!

I like our Blanco kitchen one. It’s in two parts. A plastic but you twist to seal (or remove) and a stainless steel ‘pretty’ cap that you use turn the plastic bit. Not likely available for a bathroom sink but I like it because it’s just a plug so won’t fail and is easy to clean. The utility room is a more traditional push in plug which also works fine. Both bathrooms are pop ups for the sink and a lever for the bath. The bath one will inevitably fail eventually and I can’t get to the other end of the mechanism so will be replaced with a plug.

Another style with a clear flow (apart from the stopper) is the flip top type, where the stopper remains permanently in place but rotates from vertical to horizontal. Though it may also put your earrings at risk.
