Correct.

I was thinking a large tapered washer with the centre milled flat, so the ramp lifts the arm of the hinge (the threaded bit.

Though it being threaded isnt ideal as it will be lifting the gate on that.

Has the benefit of being simple, fail proof and cheap. It does however require a mill to modify the taper washer.

I changed my mind and bought the ‘standard’ spring type affair .

I could get an L bracket of some sort to mount it flush with gate . But if I mount it skewed on the wall will it still work ?

In my mind the physics are the same . But rather than drill and find out thought I’d ask first .

I could mount the spring lower so the spring is more inline .

Does it matter if it’s at the top , middle or bottom ? . 🤔

Well since no-one else has replied. Any luck with this? I can't see it working too well as shown.

BTW: that cable looks like it needs attention.

Yes it works , in a way ! . If the gate it left fully open it will close it . If you deliberately just open it a ‘bit’ the spring doesn’t have enough tension to close it fully and latch . But it’s good enough

I had one once where you could twist the spring a quarter of a turn and then replace the peg in the base.

Thats exactly how this works . I twisted the top as far as I could before getting the peg in . They give you tiny holes on the head and a match stick metal pin to put in and turn it . That would snap I think . Managed to use a slim drill bit to turn it - but I reckon any more stress would snap that .

I used a long nail with the point cut off.
