Hi,

My dad just had whe whole roof replaced with new tiles and before the scaffolding has come down(and before they have been paid fully), I took photos of the work.

I notice several tiles have corner edges missing. Being brand new I would not have expected this but perhaps it is still ok?

These tiles in the photos show several tiles with bottom corner missing. It is still overlapped but will it be a problem when the rains come? should we demand all these tiles to be replaced with undamaged tiles?

How did they manage to break so many tiles?

No eaves protection felt/eaves tray. Breathable membrane isn’t UV stable and should not be visible.

I’m no roofer, but I wouldn’t be happy. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to comment further

It might be the tiles were delivered like that?  (in which case they should have been rejected)

I tiled my roof myself, and as soon as I started unpacking the pallets of tiles, it became aparent a LOT were damaged, often just with corners chipped off.  So much so I notified the supplier and put them on notice they would be liable if there were insufficient due to the damages.

In my case as it happened, I have a lot of valleys so as I unpacked them, the damaged ones got put on 2 piles, damaged on left, and damaged on right.  By only using the ones that arrived damaged for the valley cuts and using the good ones elsewhere I had enough.  But if my roof had no valleys I would have been claiming for replacements for the damaged tiles.

If yours came like that perhaps the roofer did not bother as it would hold up the job?

I wonder if they've not laid them particularly straight and then knocked corners off to get them to sit flat? As @Mattg4321 says I'd expect an eaves tray no membrane showing, and I doubt that gutter's clipped in at the back.

I suspect if nothing more is broken underneath they'll do the job. At the least get a hosepipe on it to check for obvious issues

Thanks for the input. I reckon the roofer just wanted to get the job done and installed tiles that were good enough. When I arrived in the evening to see what had been done, I saw one of the roofers just walking on the roof without a second thought. I'd not be surprised that the walking would have chipped the corners.

Will try the hose pipe tonight and send back some of these comments to the roofer.

Should we be demanding they replace all the damaged tiles? Cost of the whole roof is significant to have to pay for damaged tiles.

Tell them they shouldn’t have paid the damaged tiles, end of, and simply ask that they take those back for e free exchange.

They’ll whinge that they’ve been fitted so can’t be returned, which is where you say “you should have returned them upon inspection” and stick to your guns.

Explain that any which are damaged, further, from no use of a roof ladder, will also constitute damage / defect.

Can you tell them asap so the scaffold stays up?
