Alexmash Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Hi, We have just had our buildings and contents insurance cancelled after I informed them we were starting renovation work. I was expecting this and already have all singing, all dancing (read expensive) self-build site insurance in place so I just need contents insurance but am struggling. We will always be living on site either in the house being renovated or a caravan. Anyone got any recommendations of an insurance company who would insure personal contents in this situation? Many thanks, Alex
JohnMo Posted February 25 Posted February 25 I have normally just used normal house insurance on renovations, you just declare major work and define what you are doing. No special insurance ever.
Alexmash Posted February 25 Author Posted February 25 I have been turned down by three of the big names. Are you able to share who you use and I will try them. Thanks
Canski Posted February 25 Posted February 25 Try Aviva. They were flexible for me. I moved in prior to the completion cert and my insurance broker sister said they were the only ones that she could get cover from. 1
DownSouth Posted February 25 Posted February 25 We had Sainsburys insurance for our previous renovation - had to declare the cost of the work and timescale. Think they were happy with <£100k works within 1-2 years so if yours is bigger budget not sure they’d cover it. 1
ProDave Posted February 26 Posted February 26 I tried twice to get contents insurance for a static caravan on site during a build. Both times I was told nobody would insure contents in a caravan that was not on a recognised residential site. The 'van itself was covered by the self build insurance as were tools and plant, but not contents of the 'van.
