Recommendations please for “quiet” chimney pot top

My daughter has just moved into her first house and has a gas fire in the lounge, I was just there and it’s very windy outside and the noise in the lounge from this wind across the chimney is loud. Can anyone recommend a chimney pot top to reduce this noise please.

Ahhh...most chimneys have redundant fireplaces....I made a rather huge assumption.

Sorry bud, gas fire in use otherwise I would seal it up. I was thinking of those swively tops that always point downwind, trouble is you don’t know how good they are (or not) till you try one hence this thread.

Vents up the chimney via a slinky duct? Then you can pack around it.

I don’t know, I didn’t instal it but I believe the noise is simply wind blowing over the top, like blowing over the top of a bottle, I was hoping a swivel top means the wind turns the top around so it’s always pointing down wind.

Hi Joe.

Have a look at how an OH cowl works.

When you live near say trees and say have a down draft (positive wind pressure on the roof) the vertical sides still cause a draw due to the Venturie effect. It works in all directions wind. I think it's rare that these cause "whistling"

No. But a  polythene bag stuffed with fibreglass will stop your heat disappearing up, and also mute the noise coming down.

I used an old pillow stuffed into a bin bag with a few holes in the bag at the bottom to stop the bag becoming mouldy. That solution won't fleece like those expensive chimney sheep, which are shear rubbish, methinks. Ewe could use a pillow too, just ram it up the chimney! Baa humbug? 😄
