OldieNewbie Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Hi all, I was walking past a house in my locality that is having renovation work done. The back of the house has several red pieces of steel passing through the back wall. What is the purpose of these? Is it to hold the wall and internal walls in place? (I have attached a file picture for better explanation) Who would decide the location of these? Is it down to the contractor or the architect? Is there rules of thumb in regard to the steel being used, i.e steel should be a certain grade and twice the width of the wall it’s carrying etc? Cheers,
ProDave Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Yes those are temporary supports holding up the back wall while they insert that big steel beam then it looks like they are going to knock out all or part of the back wall downstairs to join through into the extension. A structural engineer would normally specify that. 2
saveasteading Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Absolutely has to be by an SE. Rules of thumb have their place at feasibility stage, but this has to be calculated to suit the individual building. Then the geometry have to be vondidwred eg the beam fits and is below the walls. Then the walls supporting the beam need strengthening, maybe even extra foundations. 1
Alan Ambrose Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 >>> vondidwred Is that special SE language? 😃 2

But that is no excuse. "Geometry has to be considered" would have been a better phrase. Vondidwred, an obscure term used in vonstruvtion for vombining practicality with svienve.
Super_Paulie Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 just dont do what my builder did and install the supports onto my old chipboard floor to hold up the rest of the house with some knackered bits of timber... "Rough" would be the word. Horribly dangerous would be another id imagine.
