Window orientation

Recommended Posts

Our recently installed internorm widows include some with low-G glazing units and some laminated units to reduce noise by a few dBA.

How do I know if they are installed the right way round, with the outside pane on the outside?

I can't see any obvious markings on the glazing so how would the window fitters know which way round to insert the glazing units into the frame?

It should have a kite type mark on the inside pane like this. Excuse the dust as still sanding and painting 😭 Actually ours has that on both sides so that doesn’t help!

All of our glazing units have a slight blueish/purple tinge on the outside pane which is presumably the Low E coating.

Ours seem to have window specification codes on both the inside and outside panes.  No kite marks.  So not so easy to figure out, unless of course I've missed some small markings somewhere.

I'd post a picture I took earlier to explain better but I left my phone in the builder's van. 🙄

If you have a low-e coating on one pane, you can shine a LED light through the glass and work out which layer the reflection is coming back from (it will have a different colour).

If you specified a pane of toughened or laminated glass, then it should have a marking similar to @Kelvin's photo.

Otherwise you'd need a specialist laser-based detector.

I do remember some old research saying that it wasn't uncommon for units to be fitted the wrong way round. So worth checking if you can.

Sometimes you can tell based on spacer sizes.  If the glass is say (3+1+3:/18/4/16/:4 Ar 90%) then you can check the wider spacer is on the outside.

I replaced some DGUs recently. They came with big stickers with the spec on and a big ‘this side out’ notice. Suggest a proper supplier like Internorm would probably do something similar.

European glass will likely be marked on the spacer bar and not on the glass, some will.

Yes ours is European and is marked both on the spacer bar and the glass.
