Ed21 Posted May 3, 2024 Posted May 3, 2024 Hi all, I've changed an inaccessable stopcock burried deep in a small shaft to a much larger access pit with lid, but thought it might be prudent to add some insulation. So foam or foil wrap lying on ballast or just cover the whole pipe in ballast or is there a better way ? Any advice appreciated. Ed
Conor Posted May 3, 2024 Posted May 3, 2024 How deep is the chamber? Normally, cover pipe with fine gravel, a EPS plug goes just under the lid. More than enough. 1 1
JohnMo Posted May 3, 2024 Posted May 3, 2024 We have a shallow chamber with pipes from borehole pump. With 25mm blue water pipe. 39 minutes ago, Conor said: EPS plug goes just under the lid Almost exactly what I did. But I had an off cut of 25mm PIR, so used that. Just made a circle to slip in the chamber. Been ok down to -7 for a week or more.

Sounds good It's 1.3m down and 32mm pipe. Got a raised rim, so a chunk of 100mm EPS close cut all the way around resting on a stop within the hole and some small gravel round the pipe is the way to go. Thanks for that !
Kelvin Posted May 3, 2024 Posted May 3, 2024 (edited) My borehole chamber is above ground although I’ll half bury it. I also used some 25mm PIR I had left over and wrapped all the pipes . I’ve also got a heated cable attached to a thermostat that I ran down the ducting the 32mm water pipe is in. Probably unnecessary. Edited May 3, 2024 by Kelvin

The ground down there is not affected by cold weather. gravel will keep cold air off the pipe a bit. however, the short section of pipe that is exposed is linked to the rest of the mains which has ambient water in it, occasionally being replaced when you run a tap. There is no harm in protecting it unless it makes maintenance or inspection difficult, hence a lump of eps or a bundle of bubble-wrap is pragmatic.
