They did that in only the very best joints in the 1500s ......

I'm missing some sort of choice cultural reference here.

I find a joint after 3PM relaxing.

Well, the celulose-based layer of the insulation does contain hemp, though not necessarily that kind.

Yes.

Just a light-hearted quip about soft drugs and glue sniffing.

Glue sniffing is much more harmful, surely. Hemp is harmful mainly because it is smoked. If the insulation here were baked into pies, and consumed in moderation...

Henry VIII's palaces often had the equivalent of carpet hung on the walls. (Watch Wolf Hall on the tele ....)

Aha! Will finish reading it first.

I've heard Soviet apartments also had  carpets on the walls sometimes (for sound insulation).

Back on topic: was the reference to the 1500s an allusion to the obvious defensive possibilities of this setup?

Of course.

Carpet is well known for its high resistance to APDS tank rounds. Russian tanks are being refitted at the moment. Iran is providing high quality Persian carpet. And the Taliban are insisting that their women folk stay at home to make more carpets.
