Radian
Tado published an article a couple of years ago showing that UK homes lose heat significantly faster than European neighbours, even when factoring in outside temperature: My thanks go out to all owners of Tado smart heating controls that made this embarrassing data available. Good on ya! 1
Kelvin
Worse still given we have some of the most expensive houses stock in Europe. We are also one of the worst European countries for supporting self-builds.
SteamyTea
Good job we left the EU, we can claim that we are the best in our union now. Even Spain and Italy, countries that are still considered unfinished, are better than us.
JohnMo
Half way down on this thread makes interesting reading on Tado, especially the UK version of their control system.
AliG
I'd take this info with a pinch of salt, much as I am sure that UK houses could be better insulated. The current temp in Barcelona is 16C and Rome is 13C. It is highly unlikely that the average house in Spain or Italy is better insulated than the average house in the UK. JohnMo
Most of Sweden and Norway, plus other cold countries could just be on WC with a small nighttime setback. Most these surveys are rubbish data in and out and most likely suit an advertising drive at a point in time. But most of UK are based on on/off controls anyway. Radian
They must be extrapolating the data to get a 20oC delta from Spain anyway. I'm not sure I'd say they base their surveys on rubbish data though. After all, they do have exceptionally good data coming from inside people's homes along with their geolocation data. It's something they've been exploiting for other purposes as well: COVID-19 has caused a 14% increase in home daytime heating London, 20.03.2021 - A new study from tado° has found that UK homes had their daytime heating on 14% more this winter in comparison to the previous winter. Despite financial and environmental savings made with less driving, home energy bills have gone up as heating use has increased. UK homes heat up much faster than European neighbours on hot summer days The study, conducted in over 60,000 UK homes in the summer of 2021, found that a UK home with an indoor temperature of 20°C and an outside temperature of 30°C in sunny weather gains on average 5°C after three hours. Compared with some Western European neighbours such as Germany and Italy, UK homes are gaining heat more than twice as fast.

We have the smallest area housing in Europe. It is quite hard to disagregate the true numbers unless the experiment was set up with the express purpose of finding something out. I would like to play with their data and see what comes out. I did hear a good term about data collection yesterday. It’s been widely reported that UK houses are poorly insulated compared to many European houses. Looking at the graphic overall, rather than the absolute numbers, the countries that are the best are the countries many of us would guess to be the best. Even just taking 3G many Northern European countries typically only supply it rather than 2G.

You just have to create a cloud based heating control system and undercut the competition. Then you'll get all the data you could dream of. Was a good correlation between age of buildings and energy usage. A very impressive step when building regs changed and cathode ray tube TVs went off the market.
