puntloos
I know I discussed this before, but then it turned out (see topic elsewhere) that I couldn't have outward french doors (at least- not with my current passivhaus door supplier.. and changing all doors is.. drastic). So. What would you do: (note, far left is one panel of another sliding door, same size as the middle one. (both 2.4m wide) 1/ An easy exit with a standard door, next to a nice picture window. Have the 3 panel (1100/panel) sliding door open next to it. Optimal for sliding but a potential clash with side door blocking slider. 2/ Same idea, but with a 4-panel middle opening door (844mm panels). Would prevent this walking out, blocking clash. 4 panels is different than the 3-panel slider to the left. Somewhat uneven 3/ Slider opens on the left side. Not a straight walking path from front door anymore. Prevents clash. 4/ Give up on standard, 2 sliders. Probably the only logical design is this approach.. Or any other? I'm tempted to go for #2.. not sure if the unevenness is a crime, or if I should simply make the left door 4-panel as well - 844mm per panel is respectable enough even for accessibility Edited November 22, 2022 by puntloos
Bonner
Why do you want a standard door? I agree they are easier to use but how often and what would be used for (putting bins out, letting dog or cat out)? Have you got another back door, utility? Would you not want a wide opening from the kitchen in the summer? I would be inclined towards option
ProDave
Perhaps a bit off topic as you don't want to change supplier, but Rationel had no problem making us a pair of outward opening French doors.
Kelvin
We’ve ended up with a similar problem due to some challenges fitting a 4m triple glazed sliding door. Attached to this was a 1m coupling tilt and turn window that could be used as a door as direct exit from the kitchen. In the end we’ve had to reduce the slider to a 3.6m triple glazed slider. The problem this caused is the tilt and turn window is now 1.4m wide and inward opening only so blocks the stairs when open or clashes with the island. It also creates a slight unevenness as the two other tilt and turn windows on this elevation are 1m wide. Our options are fit a fixed light window instead and give up on the door. However, practically I think we’ll use a door more often to exit on to the patio for morning coffee etc than we’ll use the slider so I really want it still to be a door. Our solution is to fit 1.4m wide French doors. Although I believe our window supplier only do them as inward opening. The reason I mention all of this is to test if you are more likely to use a normal door to exit onto the patio than slide open either slider for the morning coffee etc. We felt for us doors would be more practical for daily use. That said, having two sliders would create a very open feel so of all your options 4 is probably best but I’d definitely think through how you think you’ll best use the exit. The renders are really nice. What are they done in? Edited November 22, 2022 by Kelvin
