Miserable job, been there, done it, never again.

It must be an old house to still have distemper so I would be looking instead about leaving it, insulating the walls and plasterboarding over if I encountered it again.

We scraped most of it off dry with a scraper, a lot of it just fell off, but some was still stuck and needed soaking.

Forever (well it will feel like it), try to get it off dry first as it sticks like sh1t when wet and it will go everywhere, then you will end up trying to scrape it off the floor 😱

Back in the nineties I used, well actually Wendy used, a scutch hammer and comb to remove distemper from a couple of brick walls prior to plastering. It took a hell of a long time but I'd rather do that than use sugar soap.

Sorry but how long is a piece of string??, depends on how many coats have been applied and what’s under it, I doubt anybody could give you an accurate answer.

to sugarbsoap off distemper

Isn't distemper made of lime?

I wouldn't fancy brushing brick acid overhead, but it might speed things up on the wall......NB I don't know and maybe this would be  a bad thing.

Only after scraping as a first process.
