James94
Hi, I have got 115 bare root laurels 2-3' in height hopefully arriving on the 10th of this month and was wondering if anyone has planted any in the past. I have looked at an old post on here but not sure if this method is suitable for laurels and would hate to get this wrong, any advice would be appreciated. Big Jimbo
I planted 130 Laurels about 4 years ago. However they were 5 footers at the time. I planted them 750mm apart. The only thing i was told was to make sure they were watered well for the first year. They are 10ft tall now.
Roundtuit
Can't comment specifically on laurels, but I planted 250 hornbeam bare root plants. Setting out to do the best possible job, half of them were planted in a dug-over trench, but because it took forever, the other half were planted in slots with a spade. There's was never any visible difference in development, so I've probably put in another 250 mixed native hedging in using the slot method since, with less than 5% losses. Watering next year is probably going to be the most important factor. Top tip: get a few extra and pot them up, in case you need to replace a few in the first season.
Temp
I planted 60m of hedge in our paddock. I purchased "whips" online and planted them by pushing a spade in to cut an L in the grass. Lifted the turf in the corner of the L, inserted the whip and pressed the turf back down with a heel. Probably took longer to fit a cane and rabbit spiral. Think I planted 250 over 2-3 days. Only about 5 or 6 failed to grow.
James94
@Big Jimbo was they bare root when you planted them or root ball/ pots? @Roundtuit I’ve been looking at the method your mentioning but not sure how long the roots will be have to wait and see, if there long I’m not sure if I can just have a slot from spade, I think roots need to be spread out. not sure how many we will have spare if any, maybe I’ll space them out a little more and pot them in case of any losses( great idea) @Temp as I’ve said I’m not sure what the root size will be like so not sure how to plant them yet. Don’t want to dig trench all the way down side of drive it would be a night mare. Soil isn’t that great down there the line I’m taking is directly above services so clay and tamped back with jcb. thought about an earth auger but I’ll wait till Wednesday to decide, the website said if stored correctly I don’t have to plant immediately. regards. scottishjohn
longer you leave to plant -the more failures you could get get them in as soon as you can and water well hope you like hedge cutting =--cos they grow very quickly and never stop Edited November 8, 2021 by scottishjohn
