Morning!

I was going to have a ‘plant room’ in the detached garage and duct the services to the house. Ashp, cylinder. The garage is 7m from the house, the plumber thinks deffo cylinder in the house. Any input?

I appreciate it will give a ‘dead leg’ of hot water and heat losses? It’s going to be a small house due to planning so I was hoping to save space :)

Your shout, I see nothing wrong in the cylinder in the garage if space is a premium just make sure it’s well insulated cylinder and garage space where it’s located.

Along with insulated underground pipework.

Best add spare ducts for future use while you are digging out!

IF you keep the cylinder in the garage you WILL need a how water return circulating system or your hot water delivery times will be stupidly long.

I would put the HW tank in the house as close to the main points of use as I could so as not to need a HW circulation system.

Ha ha.  I play with wires normally.  Pipes and wet things is a side line.

Let’s be honest you can put it anywhere you want as long as the system has been designed and installed properly.

At work I’ve got gas Boilers 70metres away from the cylinder  and other equipment as I didn’t have space for them in the same plant room, Architects!

work no problem.

I have found that even a well insulated cylinder can generate a fair bit of heat.  Why not locate it in the deep cupboard next to the stairs?

The downstairs toilet! :)

this links nicely with my previous solar post- it’s joining the design dots between installer and supplier.

Under the stairs then?  Or with the shoes / coats?

I’ve found an area upstairs- I guess it was a ‘pipe dream’ I’d have a proper little plant room!

it’s a shame we don’t have build threads on here, I could show the final plans etc :)

Plenty of people post their plans for discussion.

Like many I started off designating a room as a "plant room"  In reality it only houses the MVHR unit and a few valves and a pump for the heating.  A monoblock ASHP needs next to nothing inside and the HW cylinder was relocated to the corner of a bedroom (where one day it will be boxed in as an airing cupboard) to get it closer to the taps.

The "plant room" is now better used as a workshop, that happens to have an MVHR unit in it and a few bits and pieces relating to the heating.

this wardrobe is looking a likely candidate for mvhr, cylinder, distribution board etc. Just don’t think the utility is anywhere near big enough.
