My ASHP, UFH, and how to use them

Hi everyone

We had our ASHP  commissioned with our unvented cylinder and underfloor  heating last week. They told me to increase the temperature every couple of days by a degree or so to  protect the slab from cracking. I presumed they just meant increase via the room thermostat but now I'm thinking I should be looking at the flow temperature? Anyone any idea how to do that and if I need to?

The ASHP should be heating the UFH directly, and also preheating the cyclinder forthe hot water.

I've just set the hot water and heating to always on, as hot water was off before and heating had been put on a schedule.

Also, our downstairs is currently 17 degrees when we get there in the morning even though the room thermostat is on 15 degrees, I think the dehumidifer  is kicking  out a lot of heat.

Attached are some photos

What make and model is the ASHP?

There should be a setting for water flow temperature, that is the one you want to slowly increase. Read the manual or post the details and someone might know your particular HP.

Why is it only pre heating the DHW?  you should be able to heat it to at least 50 degrees usually with an ASHP.

That looks like a standard boiler programmer.  Is there another unit specific to the ASHP where you can set the parameters?

Oh I didn't know what temperature they went up to sorry if the preheat thing was throwing us off track

It's a Grant Aerona. There's this next to the manifold,(photo before installation) which has the ashp right outside it, but I was told there weren't any settings for me to be messing with in there...

Only thing you need to fiddle with is the black mixer with the white dots on it in the UFH box to change the flow temp but I would check what it is doing now with the gauges on the manifold first.

This one at the bottom? Then read the temperature at the top?

How well insulated is the house ..? And what are your floor coverings ..??

it's 125mm rockwool plus 40mm celotex in the extension and 55mm celotex in the barn (500mm granite walls)  all one  area, about 35 square metres

But 2 big bifolds in the extension too

The pipes are in the slab, one pour no screed, and we havent got the finished floor down yet, it will be engineered wood

Right so EW can’t go above 28°C surface temperature, so you’re probably talking a max flow of 38°C or so. I would run it at max 35°C to see what the ASHP does as that is the sweet spot for them to run at but you may have to tweak it up slightly.

And the dehumidifier will be pumping heat out too - surprising how quick they can heat a room !!

Thanks!  but start lower, from 12 and increase like a degree every couple of days? Thats what I was told by the plumbers

OK I just tried turning it and nothing happened... I  turned the room thermostat up too. Hope I turned it back to  roughly the position it was in before!  This is whats inside the little  unit I pictured before

Never seen UFH crack a slab with 35°C water ....

What does it show if you push the sun/snowflake ..?

Nothing will happen unless the UFH is calling for heat. Need to turn the room stat up and then let the UFH kick in, then the ASHP will run and you’ll see the flow temp on the top rail thermostat.

That control panel should be capable of controlling lots of things including lots of setup parameters.  Amongst them will almost certainly be maximum water flow temperatures.  But they can be fiendishly complicated things which is why I chose not to use the timer functions on mine and treat it as just a way of accessing setup parameters.

Hi Peter, turning it one way makes the thing I am turning twist up and the other go down, any idea which is hotter or colder? The temp guage doesnt change immediately so I'm not sure!

Note the temperature.  Turn it a full turn in one direction.  come back in 15 minutes and see which way the temperature has moved and by how much.

Hard to tell  but is the immersion heater on.

The tank doesnt feel warm, and I dont understand why it would be if I have set the heating and hot water to always off. Unless theres some standby heating :/
