Rendering polystyrene
Highland build replied to Highland build's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
@Nick Laslett Brilliant I've got ten bags of the aquabase 226 and the mesh and corner beads delivered so I'm gonna just go for a coat of that and see what it looks like if the colours too dark for me apparently you can paint it with silicone based paint. I'll get some before and after pics and see for the group. Cheers Maddie- 15 replies

Covering an EPS plinth
Highland build replied to Nick1c's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Hey @nod have you got any idea what would be best to render onto the EPS I'VE BEEN TOLD AQUABASE ewi 226 WITH A FIBERGLASS MESH or aquamat elastic with fiberglass mesh or polyester fleece? any comments on either of these? which might be best most of the area covered with it will then be underground back filled against according to the diagrams. -
Timber frame passive standard build
Highland build replied to Scotrock's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Hi Lizzie, I'm just starting to think about how to cover my raft and was just wondering if you have and finished photos of this with the FGL built up and what threshold junction you created as you come out of the sliding door? Any photos would be so helpful. thanks -

Hi I wanted to put this in the rendering plastering trades section but couldn't click on that topic title for some reason. Has anyone rendered onto external polystyrene insulation? Its actually the base of my founds an EPS insulated raft. The two products i'm looking at are Aquabase EWI 226 a silicone render system with a fiberglass mesh or a cement slurry aquamat elastic with either 10cm polyestewr fleece or fiberglass mesh Anyone done this before and got any advice on either product or covered their EPS RAFT base in anything else that worked well? Cheers

Hi, Have any of you got any photos of this? also how did you any of you construct patios or decking next to the insulated raft modules? Thanks

This is where we're at just now. Water and electricity being connected next week and the insulated raft being put together head is spinning but I guess that's building a house and will probably continue for the next 6 months ahhhh so yea I'm not loosing sleep about earthing clamps and tape any more!

now does anyone want to comment on whether they used top hats around their services to seal their DPM 🙄 now that the eathings been ticked off the list of worries thats next on the list😆 yep i am at the you have to be insane to build a house and i'm only on week three🙈

ok thanks everyone i think i'll just forget i ever read about it!

It just advices this earthing the reinforecement mesh in the isoquick guidance, i spoke to my electrician in a brief call as he was on holiday in Lanzerote and he said this is total overkill Did anybody with a raft foundation do this?? please send advice and insulated raft people
-
@PeterW Yes its 250 EPS and then a 200mm structural slab with 2 layers of reinforcement, the manufacturer suggested an earth tale(not sure if that was typo and he means earth tape) and a spare duct next to it poppingup in the plant room but could someone whoes done an insulated raft explain how they did this and what they used exactly
-
Hi, Can anyone who has built an insulated raft foundation tell me what exactly they bought to attach to the reinforcement mesh to earth the slab? Any links to products to buy or photos would be great as I'm going to need to have the right thing for next week. Thanks

Hi @SuperJohnG just wondering from your experience Would you go for full sheets of the reinforcement mesh 4.8m x 2.4m or smaller 3.6m x 2m sheets of the A393 reinforcement mesh? basically i've got quotes for price and both same price so I'm thinking the smaller will be easier to handle and put in place but will have more overlaps and ties. Just wondering what you would go for having laid the stuff in the raft? -
Protek - No more policies available.
Highland build replied to SuperJohnG's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
Protek were the ones that asked me about contractors, so I had to admit I was project managing, getting all the trades in separately, so there's the risk right there for increasing the premium itself ? -
Do you mean you cut away a depth of the edge of the concrete to sink the window thresholds lower? Has anyone on here used and isoquick base, @Gus Potter, @PeterW @Jeremy Harrisis what @IanR suggested make the threshold fit the flooring not the other way round possible with the isoquick raft? Thanks @SuperJohnG i need building by pictures to get my head round this bit!

Protek - No more policies available.
Highland build replied to SuperJohnG's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
yea that was quite interesting in the it was 2200 insurance premium and 2500 audit inspection fee plus tax underwriting fee and something else. their going to do three inspections on site. All the other quotes were about 100-1500 insurance premium and mega bucks for inspections. -
well I would love to do this it, would make life very easy but i presumed with the structural slab setting the level for the soleplate? and then window frames? set depths? I might be wrong, first build I've never seen a kit go together, soleplates, window sliders doors being fitted so i presumed these ontop of slab would create a height of the door thresholds above the slab.

I had nightmare i went for 5100 in the end. protek was the cheapest for me. Try Advantage their lender list is slightly smaller than Protek but still got alot of big lenders Santander HSBC etc but see what they can do. SBZ build care 11,000, 7500. Only building 149m square but its the location not the size for us. It was painful to pay i tell you but got it. -
Hi @TBlew I,m on an insulated raft 200mm reinforced structural slab with the UFH on the top layer of reinforcement mesh (before anyone asks no I'm not building concrete multistorey) a lightweight timber frame but hey ho I absolutely thing this has been belt and braces possibly overengineered by the structural engineer but I'm obviously no the expert so I'm going with it! Anyway I'm just trying to workout thresholds for doors and sliders. I too though about power floating and polishing the structural slab as the final floor finish but decided too risky cracks expansion gaps could look pretty rough possibly meant cutting out edge module to get flush thresholds so amd just going to aim for a flat level slab and go with tiles or wood flooring straight onto slab. So apparently my door thresholds will be 25mm above the slab a tile plus adhesive will ( @nod ) just told me will take up that space and I know you can get ultra thin low profile 25mm shower trays so I am thinking phew we may not have to try all this complicated boxing out walk in shower area or digging out the depth of tray after concrete pour to achieve a flat tile to shower tray junction. Anyway just though it might help you @TBlew as when your having the cost of the raft and concrete slab and reinforcement a levelling screed is definitely something you could do without. Anyone got any idea of a build up 25mm with wood how would you make up the space with a laminate to me an underlay layer will get in the way of the thermal transfer of heat from UFH pipes in slab. Any of you insulated raft folk got any input, that won't work that will work gratefully received! Starting on site March.
