Hi All, So the plasterer wasn't able to put back the ceiling light and we bought a new one to be put in its place (as it was pretty old style - probably over 30 years). I had intended to keep it after plastering was complete, but since it wouldn't go back up and it was eventually thrown away in error, we got a new one. But I am not sure how to put this up - or is it best to get in an electrican? I had bought this from B&Q and reviews did say installation was pretty easy!

@saveasteading, think you are spot on! I've re-visiting this project now since I cannot find a reliable bathroom installer. I found a structural engineer, and they have a ton of good reviews on google and we have him scheduled to come. I did also research for builders and asked the SE if he could recommend. He actually recommended one that I had found myself (one with a number of good reviews on Trust a trader), but it makes me feel a bit more comfortable since the SE recommended him too. Anyway, the builder informed me that it is likely a load bearing wall but the SE would confirm, (just so happends builder could come out before SE), anyway, he is quoting about £3k - which is pretty eye watering Currently, the wall to be removed, one the other side, has a old wooden cupboard attached to it, and along that is the sink with a battered cupboard under it (not sold wood, more like mdf or something). If the wall is removed, of course the attached wooden cupboad needs to go (I am assuming the builder will do this within his quote and not expect us to remove it) - or maybe if we do, it will save us some money (tho it is pretty sturdy!). My question, is, is it possible to get a tempoary kitchen sink in situ or continue to use the one we have now (which is not technically connected to the wooden cupboard attached to the wall). As there might be some wait for a joiner to come in to put in some worktops (need to find one/or there is a long wait list).

we use virgin cable for now, but who is to say we won't go back to BT in the future, the little bt box is still there.

Hi All! The ceiling has finally been overboarded and skimmed!! how is this (compared to the dot dab debacle!). In the last photo, the plasterer advised there was a bit of a deep hole there and he filled it in (with cement I think, because he filled the areas where the picture rails with cement prior to skimming), anyway, where I have circled, is the deep hole in question, is this still drying? as the rest of the room is essentially pink. It has been 2 weeks since it was done. Should I leave it to dry some more or is it ready to be sealed?

Hi @ProDave, Is the below clearer? It is a BT line, so technically, it does not belong to us and we cannot remove it? Had it been skimmed into the wall, wouldn't it of left a bump in there?

Hi All, I'm looking for some advice. We have a door that is due to be removed and we would like to re-use this door in its new location (so all our doors are still matching with the same wood). Although, it is probably easier to purchase a new door than trying to upcyle the one we have. Please excuse the look of it - this is the aftermath of removing the paint off of it, still needs a little tidy. Does anyone know if it is possible to add glass in this type of door - I have seen youtube videos of doors having glass put in them, but they are not panled like the ones we have. Why do it want to keep this door - because it is very good wood, probably better than the type you buy from the likes of b&q (it is original, old wood that came with house), and if i do replace the door with a new one, it would not match the rest of the doors in the house! Thanks.

Hi All, All the walls have now been skimmed and the ceiling boarded and skimmed. Now we have a telephone line that used to sit on the picture rails and was hidden, but since we had the picture rails removed, we have the telephone line just dangling above the door way - apparently, we cannot cut it, even though it is not in use - but the wire is not long enough to go up and follow the lines into the corners of where the wall and ceiling meet. Any ideas on how to make this wire less of an eye sore please?

Hello everybody, Wondering if I could get some advice. There is a hole in the floor within the house (ground floor), and it seems when the electrical cord/wire was decomissioned, they cut it and just left it hanging out of the floor (which they broke to get into said cord/wire) - and just left it broken. I was told to get the owner of the cord/wire to delay with it as British Gas said it was not theirs and hence could not touch it. When I finally found who owned the cord/wire, all they did was tuck the cord/wire into the broken parts of the flooring - told me to fill it in myself. Does anyone know what I need to get this filled in? can I do it myself or best to get someone professional in to do it. The floor is uneven at this point (there is a hole in the floor around the cord/wire). it isn't live, but there is another wire that is, which feeds into the electric box to the side. I asked the fella how best to deal with that to get the floor even, he just said, break the concrete up under that wire and tuck that wire into the floor as well and then fill in the hole - that it is OK to do that....is it? Any advice would be appreciated.

is this normal carpet fitting procedures? HELP!
TryC replied to TryC's topic in Wood & Laminate Flooring
so, the carpet will be replaced now, however, the supplier said that I might still have a line in the new carpet (two tones), because it has been stood up the in the warehouse? but this makes no sense to me. As they initially said the two tone line in the first carpet is a result of being stored for months, but this new carpet will be installed almost immediately after it is in store - so why would there be a line?? it makes no sense? he also referred me to the other carpet I had installed (he said most carpets have two tones), I've not noticed it but I've now got furniture on the other carpet and am not going to hunt to look for different colours! I was just perplexed at his omission! -
Hi All, This is just a consideration at this point because I do not have enough money for extension at the moment - but a girl can dream! however, I spoke to my colleague and he said his one storey extension only cost him less than 10k - is this even possible?? I thought an extension would cost quite a lot of money. Since I have no money for an extension (in my mind it is likely to cost £20k plus - for a wrap around extension/one storey or even a rear or side one storey extension) - I am playing on the idea of a garden room being installed - but there is so much choice out there - I am ideally looking for a space to put in a small gym, as the equipment will be too bulky downstairs and I do not particularly think a treadmill (even running on it) upstairs would be a good idea. Has anyone out there had a gym area/space built in their gardens? either DIY or used a company to install? Any recommendations? Thanks!

no clue right, but that is so weird, I've never seen that - not that I have seen that many carpets before. but my gosh. i imagine the guy thought it would be stretched with the carpet (the underlay?). And this install, was £100 and it was a bodge. -

so, beading removal is now taking place, and I saw this...the guy glued the carpet to the underlay - is this even normal??? in my humble opinion to, the installer should have replaced the old grippers with the ones I paid for, as they are looking worse for wear! -
Hi, I wondered if anyone could help. I recently had a doorbell camera installed and connected to a HVR via the IP address, it only allows for one. But when a the chime chime was added to the doorbell, it knocked off the camera from the HVR? how I need to add the doorbell camera back on on the HVR. The installer wants no part of it, keeps on blaming the wifi, when I told them the wifi is not the problem, as the doorbell camera on and showing on its own app, and the other cameras are online too, so it is not my wifi. I am left to sort this out on my own, having spent a chunk of change for this professional install to happen... I'm fuming! Any advice would be appreciated.

I've actually got the doorbell working now (I did the same thing I did two days ago, but suddenly, it works!). However, it does not log on the hik control. But whilst in the hik control panel (I hooked up a hdmi to a monitor) and was taking a look in there, and I was wondering, does the guy who installed it (not that there is anything interesting to see), can he tap into our cctv and look? I saw that the system said we have a 'weak' password - I am guessing this is the password, is something that I do not have or is it the same password as my logging into the app? if not, how can I get this password changed so only the people living in my house have it? I tried putting in a password for the doorbell cam, and I thought it was the encryption code, it wasn't and the panel recorded an illegal attempt.

oh brill! thanks so much. So I have a hikvision system and recently had a professional (he fitted the hik) come back and fit the ezviz doorbell camera (which is compatible with the Hik). It took an age for him to get it set up on the HiK app, because I guess he has not installed many of the new versions of the camera before (even though he is apparently, fitting them every day or the cameras at least). Anyway, I was shocked to find out it didn't have a chime with it. Was told it would be extra. I ordered the chime from Amazon and it was synced up to my doorbell, it worked like a dream. The doorbell had been added to the hiksytem via an IP address versus taking up one of the spots on the system (or something). Next time I look at the hik app, I see it says my doorbell is offline. I asked the installer and he blamed my wifi connection. I advised him that was not really an issue, when everything else was online, hik was working and the actually app for the doorbell showed it as online and I could view the outside. He is not offering me no real help at all (just said reset my wifi) and I have reached out to Ezviz but no joy yet. Then it occured, did the doorbell get knocked off the hik app/control panel because I added the chime??? Surely not :(# Any advice would be appreciated

Hi All, I wondered if you could help. After months of waiting for the installation of a door bell camera (the guy was recommended to me), he never kept me informed and I would constantly have to ask for updates, or wait an age for quotes (not sure why as it is his business, you would think he would know how much it would cost to install his product). Anyway, I digress, I asked him what colours they come in, and he didn't even know the answer to that question, saying there were light and dark colours, I asked for the dark colour, only for him to say they only have the light colour. Is it possible to colour the doorbell shell in a dark colour? and how can I do this? get a plastic specific paint/spray?

is this normal carpet fitting procedures? HELP!
TryC replied to TryC's topic in Wood & Laminate Flooring
sorry, i don't have photos of the original carpet that shows the skirting board haha. the carpet basically was tucked in regardless of the skirting board with the beading on it. It was nice and seamless. not that what I have now, which looks like the carpet is cut too short and you can see a flapping gap. -

TryC replied to TryC's topic in Wood & Laminate Flooring
but difficult to roll as the guy stuck it down with glue - I dunno, is there some sort of carpet spray/glue? There are some parts that I can get my fingers down to peek into, but I don't want to damage the carpet - then it is my fault. This is probably the reason why they want me to remove the beading - if I damage the carpet, the onus is on me. or the handyman if he damages it. Thing is, what is the beading is there for a greater purpose that I do not know about and by removing it, I get more issues (whether it is there to keep down the pesky squeaks in floorboards, I have no idea)!
