Really interesting and useful, thanks. I’ll challenge the builders with this when I speak to them about the quotes. not sure what is classes as tall and steep so I’ll get up there tomorrow and measure to, say, the highest point and post here for opinions!

Thanks. I’m a layman so not massively following, whilst I kind of understand what you’re saying. What is typical and how much space may be lost ? can you explain joist uplift and downward thrust in this context please ?

Sorry, what is FF?

Currently have a 3 bed semi detached with two decent sized bedrooms and a box room converted to home office. Have a toddler and baby so need a solution to give them their own rooms and a loft conversion seems the way forward. To move to a bigger house in the area will be another £150k so is out of the question. We have a good loft space and could make it the biggest room plus en suite. Now, budget. No idea really how to forecast this as totally new to it but it would all need to be done by trades. All in company would be best as we want minimal hassle and want it done as quickly as possible, won’t be easy with a 2 year old and a 5 month old baby, but appreciate this will be far more expensive. What we want is a rear dorma and hip to gable at the side for maximum space and headroom. 35 sq metres roughly. We are on the south coast fyi. What sort of ball park budget should be realistic and what other considerations before proceeding?

Fridge not cooling but freezer is fine

Fridge not cooling but freezer is fine
AdamD replied to AdamD's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
Well I got it going again after fully defrosting the freezer coils, thought I’d won then 5 days later it goes again. So am completely at a loss. Not going through that faff again. Clearly something amiss as, like someone said, it should be auto defrosting. any other ideas before I take a sledgehammer to it and buy a new one? ps: I’m not really going to sledgehammer it, although I’d rather like to -

Surely this should have auto defrosted and shouldn’t be like this? Defrosted it all manually and restarted. Feels like the fridge is cooling down so hopefully was just something frozen and not allowing air flow. Although need to understand what as am sure it shouldn’t do that. -

Yeah that’s the fan and is rotating freely -
What to check? Are these the condenser coils in the freezer, or the coils externally on back of unit?

Looking to get a small area laid with artificial grass - area is 3x3.5m - area already has compacted type 1 MOT, weed membrane and decorative stones. - stones will be removed by me leaving circa 100mm drop from patio and we want it to be flush to avoid trip hazard - purpose is a small play area for toddler questions: - what to look for? There are so so many on the market I haven’t a ckue - ballpark cost per square metre for a decent mid range option? - how much do you think it should cost, roughly to be prepared and laid? - recommendations where to buy from?

Very basic astroturf lay on a square 7.5m ² area which is currently made up of compacted type 1 MOT, weed membrane and decorative stones. We want to remove the stones and replace with astroturf to create a play area for our children. feel that it is a simple job but keen to get some tips as to what the process would be to do this job

Ended up getting 4 quotes for this: 3.3k 3.5k 4.3k 5k Quite a range and more than I anticipated. Need to re-think options - any more ideas as to what we could opt for instead of glass?
-
That looks good. What length did you put in to get it to around 1k? Seems more than that for me

Back of sleepers no accessible as is backfilled
-
Yeah it’s fully landscaping surely, it’s out in the garden!
-
Not sure why the convo has got into building regs etc! As moonshine said I’m just looking to do something to protect the toddler!!
-
Posts behind the sleepers which they are screwed to, and then sleepers screwed to each other
-
How would you fix it in, posts coming up from the stones, screwed to the sleepers and run it off that? Don’t really want to concrete into the stone border
-
We are looking to install something along the sleeper walls in the picture, predominantly for safety as we have a toddler and a newborn, but also we want it to look nice! Glass balustrades were an option but have just had a quote of £5k for the 8.5 metres which is well out of our budget so am Just looking for some more suggestions as to what we can do? thanks in advance

Pulls straight off without touching the button, which obviously makes it unable when using etc as somehow it isn’t fixed in. But I’ve taken it out and properly pushed it down and clicked it a few times, but still just lifts off without the button. Maybe faulty, just seems odd and something that should be so simple
-
Not possible, done that when I installed it. Won’t go any further. All lines up with the seat holes. I’m perplexed!
-
All lines up properly etc but when fully open it doesn’t feel like it’s locked in and comes loose easily. Any ideas?

Washing machine in outbuilding - turned off
AdamD replied to AdamD's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
They took the packaging away when they delivered - at the time I thought great less for me to do but didn’t think at the time where it’d be stored. To be fair it’s just for 2 more nights and it isn’t as cold now so I’m not too concerned -
Had a new machine delivered and can’t install until the weekend, is it safe to leave in the conservatory for a few days switched off, or too cold? This morning for example, freezing. literally only until Saturday but don’t want to do anything that could harm it

Interesting, looks there like the latch is the other way round to ours. Can’t see how I can flip it as it’s got a bit that needs to go under the circled bit here
