eve'in all, Just spotted our underfloor heating thermostat and asked our plumber for an alternative, seemed very bulky and dated, very ugly to be honest, he left an alternative which was worse, alomost yellow/white colour. He said the list is endless and take a look on internet, does anyone have any modern ones fitted e.g. Slim, low profile, white etc? The wife is in a fluster over these she said they look like a schoool technology room from the 80's ? Cheers

Nice bathroom, that's how I'd like ours to look. I was concerned that lkea items may be a waste of money in long term. I'm impressed with Ikea bathroom items but wanted to hear what others thought.

Good idea to use a QS to compare gender prices. In our experience contractors are unwilling to tender for works which require a detailed breakdown. With demand high for a contractors some won't even look at plans. All our responses included PC sums, some have been estimated ok and others such as electrics and plumbing have gone up. Ours is 2600 sft with a PC sum of 13500 for plumbing UFH and rads upstairs, MHRV but PC sum was revised and is now 15,000. PC sums are way out, budget 20 percentage for increases and unforeseens

Alike some self builders I'm running low on £s, we are at the stage of picking bathrooms and it's proving costly. Has anyone ever bought a Ikea vanity unit with basin and what has been your experience, at £220 its seems good value compared to a Roca vanity unit at £450 but wondering...do you get what you pay for? Or should we opt for a good quality semi pedestal which is cheaper than Roca Vanity unit? Or go for an Ikea unit, looks good in my view. Any thoughts and tips would be appreciated.

Enjoy the drawing stage as it's going to get tough when u get to detailed stage. Lovely open plans, I'm a little jealous. A word of advice, the kitchen/dining/lounge area as detailed in your revised drawing is long, my parents have this arrangement, when there are several conversations happening at one time, it can get quite noisy from one end to the other, this is distracting when trying to watch the F1 and in my view leads to talking over one another. I'd put the dining area out to the left. Glad to see you've moved the hob out of the island, hob in island is a NO according to my wife really good idea to post your plans on here, great to read feedback

Having over spent on unexpected items we've had to put our plans for a garage to a halt. We planned to put the boiler in garage but without the garage where to we locate the boiler, inside or outside? Ufh downstairs and rads upstairs. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi, started our new build around 9 months ago, floors were put in last week but I've noticed the window cills are turning green outside, damp weather ehh?! Can you protect concrete cills from discolouring and algae? Has anyone any tips? Or know and used any products to weather proof concrete cills?

MVHR differences
NIreland replied to NIreland's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Thanks for the replies Declan and Ryder72. In terms of ducting, what size and type of pipe does your system use or recommendations? Declan-how long is your MVHR installed? Would you recommend it? I've two prices for this brand. Speaking to someone and they prompted me to have a think about a thermal wheel which he claimed was better in terms of allergies. None of the household have asthma or anything like that but suffer from hay fever. Maybe im overthinking MVHR! -
We wer recommended to go for thermal wheel type MVHR as the counter flow versions dry the air? does anyone have thoughts?
