Best filler for floor joist holes
pritch replied to DKenn's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
The solution of epoxy wood filler produces flexible results suitable for hole fixation. The material functions as an effective solution for repairing holes in wood because it both completes uneven areas and attaches properly to the wooden surfaces. A precise application of epoxy wood filler is required because you might need to modify it to achieve the perfect result. -
How to find tradesmen for the 'inbetween' bits
pritch replied to Rachieble's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Try asking your usual tradespeople if they know anyone who can help out with things like insulation or subfloors. A lot of the time, word of mouth is the best way to find reliable people. -
Regulations for landing balustrade (banister)
pritch replied to MortarThePoint's topic in General Construction Issues
You're right that the main regulation is the height (around 900mm) and the 3000mm span suggested by Stairbox. For a frameless glass balustrade, it's often easier since you don't need intermediate newel posts, and it still meets safety standards. In my experience, modern systems can simplify these issues. For example, with this frameless glass balustrade, the design is engineered to offer a continuous and sleek look without the need for extra posts, while still meeting all safety standards. -
Removing tree ear marked for retention

I'd wait until your planning’s approved before taking it down. Once it's in the plans, it might be protected. -
What size digger do you wish you'd bought?
pritch replied to janelondon's topic in Tools & Equipment
When I was involved in a similar large-scale landscaping project, we faced the same dilemma about digger size. We ultimately went for a mid-sized digger, around 5-6 tons. It was large enough to handle significant tree removal and earthmoving tasks but not so large that it became cumbersome to operate in tighter spaces. In retrospect, this size was a great balance between power and maneuverability. -
Outdoor furniture- what you got?
pritch replied to SuperJohnG's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
We all get a bit startled by the initial price of furniture, don't we? This year, I treated myself to a 6-seater round dining set from gardencentreshopping.co.uk. The discounted price is £1,139. It may seem steep, I agree, but this is the kind of furniture that lasts for years. So, I divide the cost by the number of years, and it turns out to be quite reasonable. Let's say this furniture lasts for 5 years (though I'm confident it will last longer), then the annual cost would be £230. This way it doesn't seem as expensive after all, when you consider all the happy moments that you'll have when being outside with the family. -
Hi I'm looking to put some led lights around the roof lantern. I would like to keep them hidden but not sure where to place them. Any advice please? Thanks

Hi This pipe that comes off the upstairs megaflow tank and goes outside is soon to be inside the house now the extension is being built. It could be re routed but would be a big job chasing out five metres of brick work then around a door frame. I've never seen anything come out of it in 15 years and I'm tempted to leave it in the house behind a blank plate. What's the worst scenario? Could the contents of the tank end up in my new kitchen or is it just somewhere for air to escape if need be? Thanks

Hi I'm thinking about having a downdraft extractor in my kitchen island rather than a hood. I don't really want to be cutting holes out in my new flat roof so I'm thinking of extracting out under my floor using the flat extract system. The 100mm insulation and 80mm screed is about to go down next week so I need to decide asap. My only concern is on top of the 100mm insulation will be my underfloor heating pipes. The 60mm flat extract would go into the cut out insulation I guess ? I'm also worried about heat loss due to the extract pipe going straight out the side of the house from under the floor. Has anyone done their extract in a similar way? Thanks

Hi Yes it has a 4x2 lantern in the middle with a grp surface. Sorry not sure what you mean about the parapet roof. (See drawings) Anyone dealt with this company before ? Their c24 in 6m lengths seems very cheap.... not sure if I'm missing something?? Thanks

Hi It's 45 sqm kitchen extension coming off the back of the house. 9.5m wide and 5m out . 250mm x 50mm c24 ,osb 120mm insulation, osb. The things that worry me the most is the firrings strips and the hidden gutter. I'm not sure if I need a trimmer plate bolted to the wall or should the trimmers go into the brick work? Thanks

So how many of you did your own flat roof..just the timber part? I'm being quoted some crazy prices by chancers who think you have deep pockets because you live in a nice house. I'm very much hands on but I thought I'd leave this to the experts. I'm now seriously thinking of having a go myself.

Hi I've got marine ply 19mm on the drawing but it's double the price of osb board. I take it osb will be sufficient? Thanks
