Exactly, I wanted something totally different and the Outer Hebrides are definitely that! 😍 When I came up for the first time I did a 2,300+ road trip to explore some of the islands and just loved their raw and rugged beauty! https://www.vdubxs.com/2300-mile-road-trip/- 56 replies

small world 🙂 Yeah, planners are onboard and happy with my ideas which is a big plus 😎 but I have heard the same sort of stories of people that have bought but can’t do what they hoped with it!- 56 replies

Been meaning to do this for a while, but I thought I’d better wait until the sale was actually complete. Well, that took around 18 months, so that’s my excuse! 😂 This is something I’ve been meaning/wanting to do for a number of years. One positive thing about lockdown was that it brought into sharp focus that tomorrow is never certain, so no point putting things off that you really want to do. Rather than build from scratch, I wanted to take on the challenge of repurposing/reimagining what could be done with a small abandoned existing building or structure. Narrowing my search down from Europe to the UK, I found the building I wanted. At least I had seen a couple of low res pics and a basic floor plan of said building! It just happened to be 750 miles away from where I live, in another country, on an island that I had never been to. Still, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Only time will tell if that works out to be true…- 56 replies

external insulation External insulation on a 500mm+ solid stone wall
Chris HB replied to Chris HB's topic in Heat Insulation
OK, I’ll upload some more pics in due course… I don’t know all the answers to your questions @Gus Potter and @saveasteading but so far this is what I have discovered… It was community built, date TBC, but could be around late 1930’s, but have heard other earlier dates mentiond as well? Pebble dash exterior, slate roof over main hall, composite tiles over the front small entrance porch. I have glimpsed timber sarking boards in the roof through a loft hatch, but not had chance to get in the roof space currently. Raised tie roof construction. From what I can see/tell, it is a solid wall construction from local stone (assumed). Where I have exposed a couple of areas, it seems to have been internally rendered with a hard white coloured render (see sample chunks) which I’m thinking is more likely to be an early concrete rather than a lime render? It has subsequently had a basic timber frame and plasterboard finish later on at some point fitted over this fixed to the wall. Suspended timber floor/wooden joists, unsure as yet what they are resting on. Boards all mostly good. PS; yes it includes its very own disused bus shelter at the side of the building too! 😂- 19 replies

external insulation External insulation on a 500mm+ solid stone wall

I understand, internal insulation might be a cheaper route to go, but that’s a lot to loose off each wall in an already small space!- 19 replies

I’m renovating a small mission hall on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Due to it’s already small internal size (7.500 x 4.500), I was thinking of looking at external insulation rather than internal? Its a solid wall construction (approx 500mm+) currently with an external pebbledash finisish. Any thoughts or recomendations?

accessibility is not essential in this case, but nice to have I’m exploring all options to see if I can get a WC, basin and shower into what is proving to be a very tight potential space for a small bathroom!

I’m assuming that a ‘Quadrant’ style shower simply projects the activity space area out at an angle?

Does anybody in the U.K. make or produce sliding glass block doors? I’ve found one company, but unfortunately they’re in Australia! Something along the lines of this but for internal usage? Any other options or suggestions? https://www.blokup.com.au/gb_rb_075.htm

Not this one, but this sort of idea where you get a 1700 x 800mm Walk In Shower Tray With Drying Area - does this drying area aspect count as activity space in terms of the regs? 🤔 https://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/saturn-walk-in-shower-tray-with-drying-area-1700-x-800mm

Thanks. Wondering if with the wider trays, say 800 x 1200/1500 etc. can the extra width of the tray be counted as part of the ‘activity space? As effectively that’s what the extra width is for in terms of use?’ Or is it not seen like that?

I’m looking at the current regs and the activity spaces required for different elements, in particular showers. It’s shown that the 800x800 activity space starts at the edge of the shower tray. What happens if you want to have a wet room/walk in type of shower that has no tray edge as such? Where would you class the activity space starting from? https://www.gov.scot/publications/building-standards-technical-handbook-2020-domestic/3-environment/3-12-sanitary-facilities/

Hi, planning ahead a little here… hopefully taking on a building refurbishment in the near future. Solid wall construction building in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. (I’ll do a proper intro post later…) It currently has four 860 x 1300mm single glazed windows in the main space. The plan will be to replace them all with triple glazed units. However, in the meantime I was wondering if it was worth adding some form of temporary ‘’double glazing’ to help keep some heat in whilst camping in the building and doing the design and planning stages of the work. I was wondering if anyone had used any type of Thermocover Insulating Film for Windows before, and if it was worth a try, or just a bit of a waste of money? Otherwise I might just use some 25mm Insulation board cut to size to fit in front of the windows at night! 🤣
